ive been having trouble every step of the way with wheel fitment, it seems that honda changed everything, at different times, on the UK civic at least, first they were ET38 then switched to 45, then they were 4x100 and switched to 4x114, i thought the 114 was for the 5 stud typeR, so theres at least 4 combinations of wheel fitment,
thank christ i have the most popular fit of 4x100 ET40, otherwise the wheel options list would have shrunk loads

has anyone else had this trouble?

No. US market Civics have been 4x100 since at least 1988, if not earlier than that.
They just went 5 lug.
