Grinding noise

Aite, I have a little problem. I am assuming the brakes are the most probable since the noise stops when i step on the brake pedal. When i am driving, half the time their is a squelling grinding noise coming from one side, maybe both, and then it stops, then maybe starts again when i turn the wheel etc. Could my brakes be worn down, something out of line? I have not hit anything and have not changed the brakes since i got the car, and i have driven 42,000 miles, considering about 25,000 miles where barely to no brakes were used due to interstate driving. A friends father who said he would do he brakes for free checked and said my brakes are still good. So what is the deall...........?

probably the "telltale" on the brake pads. means you need new pads is all.

How about a perfect time to not go drilled and slotted. They're worthless and stop worse than a blank face rotor, not to mention they crack.

If you've gotten 70Kish out of the brakes, they're probably going. If someone just stuck a head in there and looked, I'd pull a caliper off and look at the pads. You'll see if the wear indicator is sticking out. Also pull a drum off and check to see that there's still lining left on the backing. Grinding noises from brakes usually mean they're gone.

well just because you have alot of pad life left doesnt alwasy indicate the brakes are "good". You could have good pad life, and worn rotors. they are several things to check for. With the civics, it is common for the pads to shift around in the caliper brackets when stopping which gives you that grinding noise. I have had it and still get it. I think a possibly fix is to add a few sets of shims in there. I suggest you pull off all 4 wheels, and find the specs for the minimum thickness of the rotors and drums and measure both. You may have one out of spec. you could also possibly have a pice of debris stuck in between the pads and rotors. You could have a sticking caliper causing one side to do all of the work. Did he tell you if both side were wearing evenly?

I am having the exact same problem right now! I'm actually going to change the pads today to see if that makes a difference. Did you ever get it resolved, Southpasdena?

Re: Grinding noise

Hello Guys!

I also have exactly that problem. If I am driving on a not totally smooth road, "metallic" noise coming from all wheels (disc brakes are in front and rear as well). But as I press the brake pedal the noise disappears all at once. The front pads are brand new original Honda parts. So even if the rears are worn I do not understand why can be heard noise from the front wheels as well?

Thanks for your answers!
