Wheels with deep dish = better performance?
This may be a little dumb, but I had a thought. Do wheels with higher (or lower) offsets perform better? Maybe the lip pushes down on tires around corners, giving it more traction or something. I don't quite know how to explain what I'm trying to say. But compare wheel 1 (no dish) to wheel 2.

Despite the fact that wheel 2 is more expensive and probably lighter, what about the design? Is there an advantage? Or does it not matter?

#1 is less likely to bend in a pothole because there's something supporting the edge.
Eitherway, there's no real performance difference as long as they clear the brakes. Lower offset gives a wider track, but there comes a point where it becomes bad as it kills your wheel bearings and starts causing steering response problems.
