Yea, just as the title says. Is it bad to overtorque bolts, like the ones on the rotors?

i think ive over torqued the lugs on my wheels but i've never had a problem ever since i been doing it. so its fine to me but im guessing it'd be better to have them torqued to the correct setting?

80 lb.ft on the lung nuts.

yeah its bad. i mean for stuff like lung nuts, u probably wont have much issues.. but most bolts and nuts have torque settings for a reason.

so u wont snap/strip/worn/tear/etc.etc. the bolt when u try to take off an overtorqued nut.. vice versa.

this is one of my pet peeve.. I HATE it when I get my car back from a shop/dealer.. and when I have to work on my car and take off the wheels for whatever reason.. it takes super leverage just to get the lung nuts off.. because some fool with an impact wrench doesnt understand torque setting.

i've seen morons at shop that doesnt know there's such thing.. and just goes NUTS with those impact wrench.

torque wrench exist for a reason. the same goes for torque specs.

If you over torque them to often you stretch the stud and eventually you will strip the lug nut on the stud and the only way off is going to be the stud breaking off with the lug. Especially if you live somewhere were things rust. It will happen ever easier. I know from experience.

actually most warped rotors are the result of extreme torque

cvayala is an unknown quantity at this point
I'll try to keep this story short.

2 lugs sheared off on one of my mercedes wheels, that can't be good. I went and bought a torque wrench found all the lugs were too tight. I sheared another one as I was trying to remove it. Now they are all good.

Next, I go to the Civic, first lug I'm trying to remove, I shear the 3/8" drive extension I'm using, finally got the lug loose then torqued it to spec.

Yeah, I would say overtorquing is bad.

1 thing I would definately recommend to have the proper torque specs is installing pullies

overtorqueing= breaking the head off a bolt and the stud is stuck inside wherever you were tightening it.

Do not overtorque anything. I have replaced about 10 wheel studs so far from being overtorqued, also causing one set of warped rotors. And now I need a new oil pan because of me overtightening my drain bolt.
