Crappy Stock Tires -- Replacements?
Guys:
Another "It's raining in cali!!!" thread. Whenever i try to drive in the rain on my stock Firestone FR-690s, they don't grip and the tires spin for a bit when I accellerate.
Any moderately priced replacements out there that are good for the daily driver? I don't want racing tires or z rated, or to change my rims, just something that is inexpensive, grips better than stock, and maybe can get a little more power to the pavement, without much expense (Think 300-400 total including install for a set of 4)
Anyone have any recommendations?

go down a local costco and see whats their selection
www.costco.com - tires
i purchased a set of bridgestone potenzo re950s from costco for like 4 bills nearly installed. comes with lifetime balancing/mounting etc etc. i know how the weather is here, windy and raining hard. but i feel bad for the east coast =|
upgrading a size up is also a good idea. for example: my ex OEM size is 185/65/15. i went with 195/60/15 for better traction and very little low profile while keeping my odometer below 1% altered.
potenzas' are very good tires for their price but their are many other options to choose from. drive safe!

yea, i seriously think the stock tires are dangerous for raining condition or hard corning... for normal drivers.
protenza's good choice, i got them too for my 17" which is super expensive, but 15"'s decent price.
btw I think costco is having a $60 off 4 michellen tires right now or something.

look my thread about PM-ing vulcantire.com price of Falken Ziex-512 on Sears Automotive.
assusming that u guys have Sears Automotive over there.........it's a very very good deal....since a new set of 195/60/R15 (installed) cost probably around $271 (w/o road hazard) and $289 (w/ road hazard)

Usually, the more the tires cost the longer their treadlife. Do you want tires that last 15,000 or 30,000 or 60,000 or 90,000 miles? Personally, I'd go with longer treadlife and not having to pay to have two or more sets of tires installed in the same period of time as I could wear out one more expensive set (and yes, you can get high performance all-seasons to last 60,000 to 90,000 miles). Play around on TireRack.com to compare specs and read reviews. Goodyears and Michelins may cost more but they usually last longer and have superior wet traction. If you don't care about treadlife, there are literally hundreds of cheap tires that will perform 1000% better than stock.
falken ziex ze-512 (60 series)
threadwear- 420
traction - A
temp - A
60,000 miles expected
sounds pretty good to me.
price has nothing to do with how well a tire performs. i can get the best model goodyear and it'll prob wear out within 40,000 miles cause of driving habits and road conditions. you can say the tires that cost more will be better overall (which is true in most cases) but their are much better choices of tires, just need to research a lot and compare. falken ziex 512 is a tire thats "best bang for the buck" as of all-season performance/overall

is it possible for the firestones to be bald after 20k miles?. I know someone who bought a civic coupe with low mileage but bald firestone tires. Was odometer rolled back or do the tires really not last that long?

I've had good experiances with Falken tires, and the ziex ze-512 is a good Allseason tire.
I've also had good experiances with Continentals ContiExtremeContact tire...
and Finalyl, one of the most important but often overlooked Item regarding good wet traction.... Tire Preasure!!!

I'm not sure I want to go to sears.. I've heard a lot of bad things about their installs... and if I were to get the 15's I'd need new rims :-( Too much money. if I'm going to go get new rims, I'll order a bundle from tirerack or something and do the balance / install myself.
However, the falkens look pretty good in terms of quality. Now I just have to find out if they make em in 14 inch (or if I want to take the plunge and buy a 15 inch rim...
What woudl you guys do, spend the extra 400 + 300 nand get rims and tires in 15 inch or just go for the 14 inch? I think that I could use the extra 400 to buy a horn that i need, personally.

gotta put a rebutal out of ur statement since it's to subjective....IMHO...
it probably depends on the location and the dudes working on it..

I really like the bridgestone turanza. Better performance and alot quieter than firestones. The stock TL comes with these I believe. Turanza LS-H.

i hear ya man. i had those crappy stock tires for awhile, and they just went so bald i had to replace them. i live in so cal too, so i timed it just right, 1 day before the rain came.
i got falken ziex 512's in a 205/50/15, lower profile and awesome traction. i haven't spun my tires in the rain once yet, even on painted lines.
i got them at 'Just Tires' for $275 mounted and balanced. awesome price. i had to order them so it took a day to get them in.

i got some kelly tires for the front.. they have a lil better grip.. but no matter what.. you slip in rain.. thats the beauty of rain.. its from the oil in the tar itself and from all the stuff that other cars drip out.. just dont romp on it so much..
