Shaking in Steering
Heres my pain in the *** story.
I hit some road debris on the 401 East Express at about 100kph. I almost missed it, But it caught the outside of my right front wheel. It cut the sidewall and put a very small ding in the edge of the rim. Nothing major. My allignment went out a hair but its barely noticable. Maybe 1 degree. I put my winter wheel on as a spare since its the exact size tire and its on a honda steel rim. The car drove with no vibration on the highway.
At that time I decided to get rid of the craptacular Firestone FR690's and put on some Dunlop Sport A2's since they were CHEAPER. I had them mounted and ballanced at a place that gets alot of BMW's Porsches and Ferraris so they are pretty well equipped and staffed. I got onto the highway after they put the A2's on and I started getting annoying vibration above 105kph or 65mph. I went back and had them reballance them to the tightest tolerance they could and the problem still exists. Even worse is that since hitting the debris I started getting brake noise.
The brake noise occurs MOSTLY at lower speeds below 40kph durring light braking WHEN HOT. But you can hear it faintly at higher speeds and preassures. Its a pulsing sound but its kind of a tinny raspy grinding sound. God I hate describing noises. Its a mechanics excuse to make you act retarded infront of them. So its in the dealership now for that and I didnt mention anything about the vibration or the road debris incident or the fact that I had tires put on. I like to tell them as little as possible because they will usualy use information against you warranty wise weither you did somethign or not. Right now they are calling it "Warped rotors". Dont understand because I dont feel pedal feedback. I dont think I get extra noise when I turn the wheel but I will try that.
SO. I have homework to do. I have to try and find out weither its my rim, my drive axle, my wheel bearing or my "Warped Rotors". I have a feeling it might be that rim in my case.
I hope that my story is another clue in solving this common issue. I will give you an update maybe today if I get my car back.

Well, the Rotors were turned. They left a **** poor finish though, the worst ive ever seen. So for the time being my brakes make some noise when stopping until I glaze them a bit. But it got rid of my bizzare braking noises. Ive never heard noises like that come from a bent rotor. Whats even stranger is I havent abused my brakes. My car only has only 20,000km on it and Ive never done anything to seriously overheat them. The vibration is still there though on the highway. When its not so hot outside, I will put a spare back on the car and see if that makes a difference. I'll probably post findings tomorow.
I have the same wheel shake @ 65mph and up. This started happening not long after I purchased Motegi MR7 17"s. I took it back to have them balanced and it's even worse! I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that they are not using standard balancing weights on the lip of the rim? They use "static" wieghts stuck down by double sided tape on the back side of the rim. Thinking of getting some rims where standard weights can be used. Ideas? Comments?

MOST custom wheels can be dynamicly balanced. It takes eiher a skilled tire person or a good balancer that has a program to use tape weights back behind and close to the spokes

hub centric rings
do these things really help?
explanation link
my car shakes a bit after 65mph. like so many, i had it balanced twice- no help.. this is my last resort!
it rode fine 2 summers ago (the first summer with the wheels on)... it only started shaking... i also had the car lowered on goldlines at the same time the wheels were installed for last summer..
im pretty sure the tire pressures are ok. but ill check again.

seem out of balance. Just make them double check it for free, if it still does it, bring it to the other shop you went to. My car rides with no shaking whatsoever on the wheel, at any speeds. I have aftermarket rims, wheels, springs, struts, and a camber kit, and totally smooth. They F'ed up.
hi,
questions:
1. How do we determine the central hub is old?
2. How frequent do we change them?
3. When balancing wheels/tires, do we pull them off and hand to the store? Or they do balance with wheels/tires still mounting on the car?
thanks

90% of the time its balancing...
The hub centric rings do help. If it still vibrates with them, chances are its balancing.
The place you bought the rims at will probably give you the hub rings for free.
1) *shrugs*
2) you dont really have to change them unless if they're broken.
3) They'll take the wheel/tire off the car for you. They put it on a machine...
My story: I bought new rims and the steering wheel shaked... I took it back 3 times and it still did it... They kept telling me it was the alignment but i knew it wasnt. I took it to america's tires and they finally balanced it right...
so yeah try taking it to a reputable shop...
