^^ they want to replace them for the $$$$$^^^
Theroetically brake calipers should last the life time of the car, but theory rairly = reality. really, you should only replace them if they are damaged or if the seals are going bad. How long that is...... Dont know 100,000 miles, 200,000??? depends on how hard you are on the braking system.

Calipers have seals that could wear out. But they can easily be rebuilt, Honda has rebuild kits, so the cost is not the same as needing a new caliper.
Now rotors and pads wear out all the time. The rotors can be turned, but heat will warp them and cause the need for replacement.

Its very common anymore to replace the brake calipers and or wheel cyl's when doing a brake job. You know how a Body shop says they cant garuntee thier work unless they take it down to bare metal and prep and build out from there? Well its sorta the same with brake cailpers. When you do a brake job with out replacing the caliper you have to press the piston back into its bore to make room for the new pads. This can sometimes cause the piston and seal to run back in an area that it wasnt used to and cause a problem. Is it common for calipers to fail after doing front brakes without replacing them ? Not terribly but it does happen. What i would suggest is if they are a repuable shop that you trust. Follow thier recomendation. Did they mention if your brake pads were wearing even from side to side, and maybe this is why they are recomending replacment of the calipers?

Oh, i forgot to also say that there is no way of setting a milage or time frame on when and if you should replace calipers/wheel cyl's. ive seen failures on brand new cars with less then 5,000 miles. But then again ive seen cars with 100,000's miles and never replaced ever. My personal recomendation is replace/rebuild every time after all they are your brakes. They fail and life is at risk!
