Started DIY painted rims
Started my rim project for the winter, and let me just say its not as easy as i thought it would be. I tried the aircraft paint stipper, it took almost two cans for one rim(or about 5-6 coats). And still i had two sand some of the paint off. Does anyone know if there a stonger paint stipper i can use, as of now i think sanding the whole rim buy hand is faster. If not, thank god winter is long up here in Wisconsin. At the rate im working on them(about 1-2 hours a day, two days a week) Ill be paint preped a month from now.

I would have them powdercoated, but i have so much time before i can put my rims back on i chose the cheaper way. Also the previous owner chew them up pretty bad, so i still have to fix them up first. I only payed 400 with tires for them. I dont wanna pay more to fix them than i payed for them.

Powdercoating will just cover all the "chewed up" spots, completely and flawlessly. They usually grit blast and acid dip the wheel before they coat it. And besides.... that paint stuff doesn't stick all that well. I tried it. 36 hours after I painted, I took them to the powdercoat shop.

One of them was previously painted and after a year later, There was two small chips on the rim, the owner didnt even sand or primer the rim either. So i dont have to be rich or have any machines, it just takes time to do good work. My original question was is there anything stronger than the aircraft paint stipper. If not, ill just continue sanding.

OK, im still sanding on my 3rd and 4th rims. Since im painting the entire rim i need to tape off the tire. Does anyone know of a tape i can use that wil sick to the tire. I tried masking tape and duck tape but neither will stick, or its to cold for them to stick. Its about 35-40 degrees out right now. Anyone have any ideas.

ya, get a heater for your garage or where ever u are painting them. it will help the paint and primer adhere to the rim as well. if its too cold, i dont think it will work as well.

Exactly, the dupli-color rim paint doesn't chip as easy as normal paint. In a couple of weeks i will be done with them. Ill try to post some before and after pics, if i can get ahold of a camera.

It chips just as easily as other paint. Once I made the decision to powdercoat the wheels (cuz the paint came out so bad), I tested it. Pretty much anything that hits it is gonna pull the paint off, just like any other paint. That and the stuff dries with a texture, so **** gets stuck in the surface, pain in the *** to keep clean and shiny... also unwaxable, so unless you get them to shine with clearcoat, you're not going to get anything very glossy.
