PSi cold measure
hi, i got a set of 98-2001 corolla S rims today for my mom's car... i was wonderin what psi should i run them while cold? because i read the sidewall and it said max. pressure 44psi... i've only dealt with 35psi max pressure tires before... i always had those set to 32psi... should i set these tires to 40-41psi???
i remember my auto tech teacher always tires 1-3psi lower than the max pressure for optimum performance... doesnt 40psi sound a little too much??? thanks for any inputs!!

Well if you've got corolla S wheels, then I assume they're for a Corolla... in which case, look in the door frame.
If they're 15's then go for 30-32, 16's go for 32-34. The fact that the max is higher is just a testiment to the structural durability of the tire. It can take more before its dangerous, you shouldn't set it that high. My Yokos are good to 51. I drive around on them at 35 on the street, 42/33 on the track.

The max pressure is basically for legal reasonings. On some tires it'll say Max Pressure XX (only in US and Canada) I'd recommend probably 32. In the winter though it's gonna go pretty low so maybe 35.
yeh, i filled them 32psi, and it said 44max on my tires.....got questions thou....if i lower my car, is that goin affect the tire pressure, cuz before i lower my car was 32psi, after couple weeks then it read 26psi, is that means stiffer suspension lose more air?
well in high school, my auto tech teacher, who was ASE certified, said that generally u should fill up the tires 1-3psi less than the max... but i thought to myself filling to 40psi seems kind of too much... but when i did fill them to 32psi they seemed kind of low on air, by that i mean the sidewall bugles out.... on my civic i filled the tires to 32psi and the sidewall bulges out only a little bit...

The sidewall is going to stick out. The car is heavy you know. You don't judge tire pressure by the sidewell unless it's very flat or something...LOL
1-3psi less than max...WTF!! Goes to show you how much an ASE certification means.

i run 45 psi on the street, no problem. My tires take upto 51 psi. It gives the tire a stiffer sidewall (more support for cornering). My tire wear is pretty even across the tread. You should check what the tire manufacturer reccomends, as you want to have a tire that will be flat on the road at operating temperature.
(You can then just see how your tire wear looks across the tread & adjust slightly if needed. You should have proper alignment to try this & a lot of miles at the same pressure, if you want to play around. Or better still, check the temperature across the tread after driving & adjust.)
