Low MPG issues 2022 Sport HB 2.0 engine
Low MPG issues 2022 Sport HB 2.0 engine
When I bought this car new in 2022, I didn't believe that the MPG the car claimed it was getting was accurate. I did several fill-ups under the same conditions, until mechanical stop on the pumps. MPG was initially around 20-22, and very slowly built up to 24 MPG. The (alleged) MPG on the EPA/DOT sticker on this car said it should be getting an estimated 32 MPG. I did the six fill-up test recommended by Honda, controlling as many variables as possible. All six fill-ups averaged out to just over ten gallons of 87 octane each. I've owned this car for two years, but because of the low MPG it's only been driven 8,100 miles. I do not use the paddle shifters. Our 2020 Civic HB is our primary car. It has a 1.5 liter engine w/ a turbocharger, no paddle shifters. It's getting 34-36 MPG. A different advisor at a Honda dealership mentioned to me that low MPG was a recurring problem with 2022 Civic Sport Hatchbacks with the same two-liter engine and CVT transmission. When I took it to my usual Honda dealer (not the dealership I bought this car from) they ran a computer diagnostic. It indicated no problems with the car. So, several questions:
First, what MPG should I really expect? The car is the "Sport" model, but that is not how I drive it.
Next, is this a recurring issue with this particular model, year, type, engine, CVT?
What can I, as the owner, do to get more MPG out of this car? It's already well maintained, and the tires are at the proper air pressure.
We should have bought two of those 2020 Civic Hatchback cars instead of just one, and are looking into doing just that if we can't get this 2022 Honda's MPG up to what we were looking at when we bought it. We didn't have these MPG issues with our previous two Hondas.

Perhaps the Honda dealer where you bought it from can run some tests and hopefully pinpoint the issue. You might want to push for a more thorough inspection than what the other dealer did. Good luck getting it sorted out, @Mr.Mac!
