2008 civic ima light
2008 civic ima light
I have a hybrid 2008 civic. 200,000 kms auto
when i come to a stop sign the car goes off to save gas sometimes but not all the time.(I guess the battery is not charged enough to risk a restart sometimes)
IMA and check engine light are on.
Everything else seems to work fine .
I'm told that the civic does not let you charge individual 'cell packs" and only charges the battery as a whole limited by the weakest battery cell pack.
I have seen 3 ways to renew the battery.
1 unplugging the terminal for 10 secs and plugging back in and charging the battery driving in low gear. Do this multiple times to force a cahrge and than drain the battery's repeat many times
2. Plug a special charger directly to the battery and all cells will be charged at once, discharge and repeat.
3. Disassemble the battery and charge/discharge each pack individually
4 I have yet to see someone charge each cell (or at least cells of bad cell packs individually. I guess people are scared to in wrap the packs
I think I will start with #1 and work down to the more complicated solutions.
I don't know much about batterys and will record my experience and hopefully get some good advice on the way.
My initial questions are.
1. Is there an easy way To test the battery to see if it is salvagable before I get to the point of removing it?
2 do all the 4 options make sense, I'm worried that after researching option 1 I may find it takes too long.
3. What kind of charger should I buy. I'm looking for a cheap used option and will report back when I buy or just before I buy it.
4. Is there other people who have posted their experience in detail that have started from the easiest méthode up to the more difficult.
5 are the more difficult méthodes like #3 and #4 worth the effort
Thank you for your help

Re: 2008 civic ima light
I am doing research and someone told me that if the IMA light doesn't come on right away, it might not be the battery.
This is my case, on some short rides the light won't come on at all.
I have found another battery and have also found a power source.
The battery is risky in that it may be a bad battery.
I am told the variable power supply astron vs-20m dual meter ( 0-15 volts DC and 0to 20 amp) might not work to charge the battery because I would need "a voltage sense/trickle circuit".?

Re: 2008 civic ima light
Today I was driving I a bit of a rush. The IMA light came on AND the red battery light (slow initial acceleration no charge or assist)
After a restart and driving less aggressively the car started working like it usually does.
I kept an eye on it and noticed the battery has 2 bars ,from there it fills up really fast to the top. And when it goes down it drops from the top down to 2 bars very fast also

Re: 2008 civic ima light
JUST a bad cell or many cells?
I put it on the obd to check the check engine
Stored code : p1570 Honda code
Pending code p0a7f hybrid battery pack degredation
In the live data I found these
control module power aka
Vpwr(v) 13.3-
absolute load value 13.3- 14.7
Load_pct(%) 27-30.
I also have access to an actual computer to check and change setting in the PC.
I will soon be plugging that in, does any one know what I should be looking out for, or if there is a setting I should change ?

Modual charging
I have also bought a charger used for RC cars, there are many parameters . I can even set it to automatically do charge /discharge cycles at specified volt and amps.
the charger is called Hyperion EOs0720i net 3 . Im confident it should work to charge the actual moduals. I'm not sure if I can charge the complete battery pack all at once since the volts don't go that high.
NiMH 1-16 cells
This charger requires a 12volt source. I will work on this later.
My first step is to force charge the battery with out opening the back seat.
Second step is to see if I can use my charger to charge the complete battery pack this will probably require removing a panel and charging the battery in the car.
The third step is a bettery breakdown and charge the moduals.
If for some reason I can't replace bad modules I may try to charge/ replace individual cells in moduals. This may require spot welding.

Force charging hybrid battery
FOrcs charging seems to not be as good as grid charging but I don't have a grid charger.
And I don't think I can grid charge with my charger .
1 véhicule off, disconect negative terminal for 10 secs.
2. Plug back terminal leave in park let self charge
there should be green bars on the charge side
3 once it has charged to the max, you should see the battery barss shoot up to full 8 bars Thai meams charging has stopped
4 turn off car once charging has stopped
Unpulg, wait 10 secs replug terminal turn on , wait for charging to finish repeat.
Repeat 3 times every hour for 8-10 hours !!
Keep track of how many mins it takes to recharge( it should be decreasing each time.
Once done, drice around and see if the battery last longer before it recalibrates.
If so they say a grid charger will help. I'm just seeing if I can get more juice out mine
I don't think I will last 8-10 hours
