Oil change interval?

Hello,

I own my 3rd ever 7th gen civic. 2004 lx 4 door. I owned it since 140k miles, it now has 213,900 miles. Just got a new timing belt, water pump, tensioner, plugs, crank and cam seal. Everything looks like normal wear. Anyways, I've been religiously changing the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever first since I've owned it.

I looked at my Haynes manual and it says every 3 months or 3,000 miles whichever first.

I've been using 5w20 penzoil conventional when they have it, and supertech 5w20 conventional the other times. Which interval should I stick to? I hope to get 275k+ miles out of this car

That recommendation is probably using conventional, because that’s all conventional could do at the time. I always did 3,000 miles because it’s 5,000km for me and it’s a nice rounded off number. I also use synthetic so it’s barely broken on when I change it lol. If the oil looks good when you drain or, I doubt I’d change anything.

The owners manual would be a better reference instead of the Haynes

I was surprised to find the '05 owner's manual says 10k miles for oil changes, 5k miles for severe conditions. I would do 5k miles if using conventional oil, I currently do 10k intervals on synthetic oil.

Surprisingly the owners manual for 2004 civics says to replace every 10,000 miles or 1 year for normal operating conditions. Or 5,000 miles or 6 months for severe conditions.

I've been using conventional since I want to keep things consistent. And this car only sees like 2000 miles of use every 6 months. Would switching to synthetic cause any issues with old seals on the car?

FYI winter is considered "severe conditions"

Re: Oil change interval?

So my local walmart supercenter stopped carrying conventional oil altogether. I'm switching to supertech full synthetic 5w20 for engines over 75,000 miles. The oil filter I got is rated for 20,000 miles.

Should I replace oil every 10,000 miles 1 year or keep doing 5,000 miles or 6 months? And should I keep the oil filter for 2-4 changes?

Re: Oil change interval?

I have never seen the point of keeping the filter on for more than one oil change. And I would stick to 5k, just make sure to check your oil level

Re: Oil change interval?

If you often drive at low speed, you can change the oil in advance as much as possible, you’d better shorten the oil replacement mileage by 20%-30%. Shortening the replacement mileage, you can clean the carbon deposits and ensure the engine's normal operation.

Solid idea, i feel this is a good idea since cleaner oil at low stop and go speeds will ensure that piston oil rings won't gunk up. Even better with synthetic oil during cold starts.
