engine swap
engine swap
I just bought a 2000 ex with a d16y7 engine thats blown and when I pulled the codes it says vtec system failure. I think someone put a non vtec motor in it and the computer is for a vtec, right? My question is what are my options for a new engine?
Re: engine swap
Engine is blown (broken piston ring, broken rod, broken cylinder), or it just wont rev past 2800-3000? A vtec code will stop the vehicle from revving above a set point.
-non vtec engine needs a non vtec ecu and
-vtec engine needs vtec ecu
if you're not sure if your engine is vtec or not, check the block number and look for a vtec cylinder, since considering the age, you may have a mismatch in block and head, as well as ecu.

When I drove it it would bog down at around 3000 rpms
what do u mean vtec cylinder?
Re: engine swap
The EX model comes with the D16Y8 VTEC engine, sounds like someone installed a non VTEC engine in that car. Or maybe someone just changed the block and used a VTEC head. Do you see a VTEC solenoid on the head? It is the small cylinder circled in red in this picture.
Re: engine swap
No there's no vtec solenoid but dude threw a vtec head in with the car bur i gonna switch gears with u guys I actually just bought a b18b1 block and transmission for it cuz I know they basically drop in. I'm experienced with working on all kinds of cars but I'm new to hondas and this will be my first engine swap. Have u guys ever done this swap? And what else do I need besides the engine and tyranny? I'll get a new non v tec computer I guess right?
Re: engine swap
Re: engine swap
I'll check it out tho. I've ordered the b18b1 now I've gotta find the transmission. The thing I'm trying to figure out is what kind of ecu I need and if its compatible with the wiring harness I have now.
Re: engine swap
Thats what I was thinking. I wanna have a good platform for the future, maybe even forced induction.. I know I'll need to lower my compression ratio but for now I'll focus on the task at hand
Re: engine swap
Type in the code that’s on the ecu into something like eBay and it’ll give you the years that it applies to (it’ll either be 96-98 or 99-00).
OBD2A is 96-98 and OBD2B is 99-00.
OBD2A is 96-98 and OBD2B is 99-00.
Re: engine swap
When I plugged in my scanner it said vtec system failure and there's no vtec head and when I drove it home it cut out at about 3000 rpms, does this mean the ecu is for a vtec? Which ecu do I need for my b18b1 Non vtec?
Re: engine swap
If the ECU is setting a VTEC code then it's from a VTEC, a non VTEC ECU would have no way to know that VTEC even exists. It's setting that code because it is trying to activate VTEC and can't because your engine doesn't have it.
Re: engine swap
Only if it has an immobilizer, if it doesn't then no programming is required. Looks like that ECU is from a 96-99 Integra. Only the 00 and 01 had an immobilizer, so you should be good. I just thought of something else too. Depending on what year that engine was made, it may not be legal to install into your car. Presuming you are in the US, federal law prohibits installing an engine that was built before the vehicle it is going into for emissions reasons, the engine must be the same year or newer. If you care you can look up what year car that engine is from by the VIN tag on the block.
Re: engine swap
I was reading that u can't swap in an older obd version but u can of the same obd or newer. Dude on this thread sent me a link to an article on this site about ecu's, thats where I read about it.
