Cant remove ac clutch plate
Cant remove ac clutch plate
People,
2001 civic ex, trying to remove clutch plate so I can adjust the gap. I removed the 14mm nut. There is now a threaded stud exposed and no way to pull the plate off, as it is very tight around the spline and gentle prying with a screwdriver did not loosen in. I hate to pry harder as I am afraid of damaging/warping the thin clutch plate. How do they do it?
Thanks.

Thanks, Colin. Got it out. Plate is severely worn inside surface where it meets the clutch , thats why it skips when engaged. Know where I can buy just a plate without the entire clutch kit?
Re: Cant remove ac clutch plate
Doesn't look like you can buy just the plate, no specific part number. You could probably go grab one from a junkyard but I would recommend just replacing the whole clutch.

If it works, it was a free fix and it buys you time and possibly a lot of miles
If it doesn't help.....well it was already broke before I got here lol
Re: Cant remove ac clutch plate
If the gap was just too wide from typical wear, causing slip and intermittent disengagement (and usually a visible wobble as you watch it spin)----- sometimes, depending on what's in there to work with, you can sometimes remove a shim to reduce the gap (at this point any bit helps, but if you get the gap too small it causes problems too)

Re: Cant remove ac clutch plate
Wanting to install new clutch with plate. Can I just remove the retainer clip holding the clutch and pull with a puller or must I first loosen the belt? If I must loosen belt do I loosen the tensioner bolt which is somewhere near the alternator? Do I have to yank the power steering pump?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Cant remove ac clutch plate
I would loosen the tensioner before pulling the clutch. It would be a good idea to replace all belts while you're in there. But if you don't want to do that I don't think you'll have to mess with the power steering. Might give you more room though

I got the new clutch on !! put it all together and wow, all works great! I skipped the replacement of the inner coil, as that would have been a pain and I know it was a gamble, but so glad it was only the worn out clutch/plate. Anyway, thanks to all especially Colin.
Re: Cant remove ac clutch plate
I celebrated too early as I drove the car and engine kicks/lurches with ac on. the clutch seems to go on/off erratically, although now with the new clutch it does not squeal. I did not install the new coil that came with the kit. Yes, I know it could be that but any way to test the coil thats on there now? Could it be something else?
Thanks, people.

Is this the first time the AC has worked since you owned the car?
