2003 Civic a/c does not work

Hi there. It's my pleasure to join you on this forum. Let's start with my problem. I own a 2003 Civic DX coupe with AC. I bought the car with AC system already not functioning, so there may be anything wrong with it... I got the story from seller that he had the ac diagnosed and repair was estimated for 500$ so he decided to not fix it. Unfortunatelly he couldnt tell what was the issue diagnosed. I also know that he had tried to recharge it himself, but this didn't help either. What I found out is that: Green light on the ac button comes on when I push the button while blower fan is working. This does not engage any fan in engine compartment, there is also no feel of compressor comming on (in the engine work). I checked both fans located under the hood and connected directly to the battery they both work. I also performed AC system DTC diagnostics and it blinked code "9". If anyone can help, or give me some clues where to go next, what to check, I will appreciate. Thx!

I don't know about the code "9", but I can tell you that the compressor will not engage if there is not enough refrigerant in the system. Sounds like you have a leak in your system to me.

According to the Service Manual page 21-5 for my 2001 Civic, it states that 9 blinks is:

A problem in the air mix control linkage, door, or motor.

It provides some diagnostics but essentially, you check the motor in the under dash fusebox.

If the compressor is not running at all that doesn't sound related to this. Did you check the compressor relay?

This does not engage any fan in engine compartment, there is also no feel of compressor comming on
No AC request signal to the PCM, for whatever reason.

Possibilities might include:

Low refrigerant charge
pressure switch problem
open thermal limiter
MICU problem
HVAC control head problem
wiring problem

That's all I got for the info given. HTH

EDIT: For the code 9, can you control the HVAC temperature from hot to cold?

That meant to simply turn the temperature **** on the dash from hot to cold, see if vent temperatures change accordingly. Does it work like it should?

If the blend door actuator wiring was disconnected (or bad actuator, whatever) then you might not be able to control the temperatures at all.

Sounds like you can disregard the code #9 from the HVAC, and concentrate on the inop A/C situation.

Re: 2003 Civic a/c does not work

take it to a shop and have them do a a/c performance check. if its low, due to a leak, than its not going to turn on the compressor.

Re: 2003 Civic a/c does not work

My a/c is now fixed. It was simply some electric issue (bad wire and fan relay according to the shop). A/c was refilled and it runs strong now (wish I had it fixed when it was hot...). Thanks for your answers.
