Replaced cam sensor, still no run if connected

Have an 04 1.7 liter that would crank but die after a second. It would run fine if the CPS was unplugged, so I figured that was the problem. Just put in the new one and the same thing. If I unplug it, runs fine. We did just put a new water pump on it because the old one had 12K on it and was leaking ( timing belt was done at a shop I will never go to again ). The belt looked completely fine, so we only did the water pump. The alternator is also new. It ran fine for a couple of weeks after we did all this work and then this started. It runs fine so I don't feel like the timing has jumped. WTH?

Go to a junkyard if you don't want to pay full dealership price
