Car will turn over but won't start
Car will turn over but won't start
I bought my son a 2005 Civic a few days ago. It ran pretty well, started just fine, and seemed to be in good shape. Today he left his headlights on for 8 hours while he was at school so obviously the car wouldn't start when he tried. After he attempted to have someone give him a jump it would turn over but would not actually start. I checked some of the fuses related to the ignition and fuel system and didn't see any blown fuses. I replaced the fuel pump relay sensor thinking it might be that, but it is still having the same issue. When the starter turns over it sounds normal but the car just won't start. There's no sputtering like it's starving for fuel, so I am not sure what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Check if the fuel pump turns on/primes when you turn the ignition to II. Listen for a humming sound coming from the back seat
Just wondering, did you put a new battery?

You can always try spraying starter fluid a bit and try starting it. If it starts and runs for a sec, then it’s probably fuel component related. Check for spark too. Start with the small stuff.

How did they jump it?
If the other vehicle wasnt running for a few minutes to recharge the dead battery, its possible that the dead battery was so low that it was splitting the voltage/amperage enough, not to start.
if they jumped with the other vehicle off, theres a good chance it wouldn't start.
-start good battery vehicle
-connect negative terminals across vehicles
-connect positive
-let run 2 minutes
-try starting dead vehicle
It's also possible that the dead battery deep cycled, and is now trash.

Re: Car will turn over but won't start
I wasn't there when my son tried to jump it, but there was a man who was nice enough to hooked it up to a charger and by the time I got there it had been on the charger for about an 1.5 hours. When we tried starting it the crank sounded strong, it just would never start. There was no sputtering like it was starving for fuel, it was just the normal crank sound (typical Honda starter sound). No inconsistencies in sound either. It started perfectly before the battery died and now it will crank only. There's about a 1/2 a tank in the car too. I did notice that there seemed to be more than normal pressure when I went to open the gas cap, but I am not sure if that was on account of pumping the gas pedal while trying to start it. It's still sitting at his school so I'm going to have it towed after I get off work and take a look at it tomorrow since it will be my day off. I am more of a classic car guy so all these new(er) cars are intimidating lol.
Re: Car will turn over but won't start
I noticed that when I put the key in the ignition and turn it the green key indicator light keeps blinking and doesn't go away. From what I read this is an indication from the Immobilizer system that the key and the system are not recognizing each other. I don't know if it matters, but the car also has a viper alarm system on it. Does anyone have a solution on how to resolve this? I suspect this is why it's turning over but not starting.

Re: Car will turn over but won't start
the normal fix on a stock car would be to bypass the fuel relay that the immobilizer is controlling. However I'm not sure if that Viper system is going to also mess with things (ignition, etc)

Figured it out. I disconnected the battery, waited a minute, reconnected it and it started right up! Good thing I didn't over think it! I've done that before and made a situation worse!
