Randomly cranks over but doesn't fire.
Randomly cranks over but doesn't fire.
Hi. I've got an 03 5sp EX. It started randomly not starting for me. Like it would start for me to go to work but after work it wouldn't. I would crank on it 5 to 10 times and it would eventually start. I've learned that when it doesn't start with the key, I can push start it just fine. But for the last 4 days it won't start with the key at all. I tried spraying a little starter fluid down the intake but it still didn't even try to fire. When I push start it it runs fine. No rough idle or spitting and sputtering. Anyone have any ideas. It does have a blown head gasket but I'm not worrying about that til after I get the starting issue resolved. Unless it's tied in somehow. The immobilizer key light comes on when I turn key to on for a second then goes out. When I turn it off, that key light flashes five times and goes out. I have not checked fuel pressure yet. I already replaced the battery thinking just low voltage. It just baffles me how I can push start it but the key won't always start it.

My guesses are you have.
A - bad grounds around your thermostat.
B- “ steering switch” is failing in the start sweep. (When you turn your key this is the part that actually powers stuff)
Quick test would be to “hot wire” the starter with a jumper wire.(preferably one extended into the cabin so you can be very safe about it)

I worked on it today. I jump started it with my pickup. Started right up. Pulled it into the garage and checked the grounds. Loosened and cleaned some. Added one from battery terminal to the core support where the ground strap is from the thermostat. I shut it off and started it maybe 5 times in there. Pulled it out and shut it off. Wouldn't start again. Even when jump starting it. The relays behind glove box would click and the cranking would change tones almost like it was going to try and fire. But nope.
Re: Randomly cranks over but doesn't fire.
Still have not ruled out the steering switch.
Sometimes if you just ever so slowly turn the key until the starter kicks on vs full speed max crank can make a difference.
The other place for grounds to check is where the wire harnesses connect very near that core support connection on the thermostat.

But it doesn't idle rough at all and I don't think this is considered hard start. It cranks really easy, smooth, and generally pretty fast. I've been working to much these last couple days. I'll dig into it a little more tomorrow if I don't have to work late again.
