Honda Civic 2003 LX feels like something is holding it back

Hello everypne,

My 2003 Honda Civic 2003 feels like something is holding it and doesn't let it accelerate when poressing the accelerator but if you press hard for few seconds it suddenly releases (like a bubble bursting) and it moves so great that you can't believe. Unfortunately this happens all the time and if you turn on the fan or A/C (it happens all the time without fan and A/C as well). The kind of feeling I get is that it could be the gas bump is blocked and the blockage goes away after the initial acceleration.
This happens when you want to start from beginning or even when you need to accelerate suddenly to a higher speed to enter the highway and as like scenarios. I am not sure if my explanations are clear but I will greatly appreciate any assistance.

is it auto? Is engine revving more without accelerating?

It’s a slow car. You need to push it hard in order for it to do anything. Sounds like you’re just pushing it hard enough that it’ll downshift rather than accelerate in the gear it’s currently occupying. It doesn’t sound to me like anything’s wrong.

Thank you for your reply.
It actually doesn't downshift in those occasions I mentioned. These occasions are mostly when the car just wants to start moving not when you are already driving.

It is auto and engine revs mostly normal but sometimes yes, I feel it is revving more than the acceleration.

these generation cars auto trans are famous for starting slipping, until it does not transmit anymore...
there is no cure, only swapping in a 04-05 trans in it.

I suppose you could be describing a slipping sensation - I just didn't interpret it that way. If that's the case, your transmission is beginning to fail, which should be shown by stored code P0730. If it's not showing a check engine light, it's either a stored code (meaning put a code reader to it regardless) or it's at the beginning stage of failure and may not be throwing a fault yet.

What's the mileage and when was the transmission fluid last changed? That's a quick indication of what's going on.

The mileage is at 154000km. The transmission fluid was changed less than 2 years ago.
If that is the case, how much $CDN should I be expecting for the repair?

when it starts slipping, only way to improve (for some time) is drain and fill new fluid as per honda instructions.
Eventually, it will die and you will need to swap in a 04-05 trans into it

'04-'05 transmissions were much more reliable. Some junkyards will offer you a warranty. Usually only 1-3 months.
