WoW!!! This is some really scary stuff gearbox, cuz all the things you are describing are exactly what happened to me before it went out. The whinning during cold starts and slipping from 2nd to 3rd. Take it to a tranny shop quick cuz when it goes out it goes out!! Mines went out when i was drving on the street and it stalled!! Really dangerous!! I had to push it
. Its gonna at least cost you $1500 to rebuild. Im sorry but its just gonna get worse for you.........

a manual swap won't? lol i doubt any shops here are even qualified to do that. and the shop is saying that they won't fix until the tranny breaks? wtf is that about. they said if its just slipping there is no need to take the trans apart. i need to talk to some other shops but in general this town is really bad for getting mechanical stuff done.

I wouldnt do a manual swap unless you plan on keeping your car forever cuz if you sell your car as a manual you will lose a lot of $$ since its been modified.

nobody would buy mine anyway so thats not an issue. i wouldn't even know where to get the swap or what parts. its too big of a job. and i doubt it would be only $1500.

Maybe its the 01-03 auto trannies. I have a 04 with 54k on it and there's no slippage. I changed the tranmission fluid at 30 and 20. At 20, the fluid was still really red for me. So i think i'm wait a little longer next time.
Then again i live in california or we don't have the really cold weather.

see at 18k my fluid was dark black with metal chunks. i didn't even know what color tranny fluid was until i poured the new stuff in. glad i didn't wait til 30k like manual says. and btw 50k isn't a magic number. some last upto 100k but the point is none will last the life of the car 200k +. but i guess really with all the other problems, maybe the life of this car IS only 100k.
you can buy a manual tranny off someone here for what, $200? ... then you need a clutch pedal, brake pedal, shifter box, shifter cables, m/t ecu ... all that stuff really isn't that expensive. Then DIY to save some ... a shop shouldn't charge a ridiculous amount for it.
K20A3 swap can be done for $4k at the most.
if you look around (and it's not hard), you can find a complete swap for around $1500 (sometimes less) ... $500 for mounts, $300 for subframe, $200 for axles... $2500 there. Shifter box and cables for around $250 if you're auto. Probably need the m/t slave cylinder or master cylinder ... whatever. If you know how to wire, you'll save money ... otherwise there's the hasport harness.
Labor from a shop costs around $1000 typically ... if you DIY, you'd save tons and tons of money.
Autos will cost more since you still need the whatever cylinders plus brake pedal, clutch pedal etc.

if its the same thing as what i found and read about a few minutes ago (after reading these last few posts) all it is is gaskets and o-rings and nuts and bolts...not the part/s that fail on our trannies...

Listen, I have been awful busy these days, but I have to run my truck by the tranny shop for a flush. I'll inquire again about the part, and maybe I can get an actual part number. I don't know if they'll give me that, but I'll try.

that would be great! oh don't worry i read your comments. i might put that in my sig haha. well there is some good news. after putting lc20 in the tranny (1.5 oz), it no longer slips when the tranny is warm. this happens after the engine has warmed up usually. but when its cold it still slips very bad. is there anything i can do to make it better?

might be just the difference in driving style and environment. When i drained it at 20k i had very little metal chunks and the fluid was all red. At 30k the fluid was black and had lot of metal chunks. I never had a honda for 200k but i did have a toyota for 200k.
My family beat the crap out of our 96 camry and the engine and tranny was still strong. It ate coolant like a mother and the power steering was drying, but it shifted fine and still got decent mileage.
I'm probably just going to keep the car till the engine dies and do a swap. Your engine might just be a lemon.

just bad luck...
I have an 01 auto with 80K plus and I redline that baby every other daily, and only change the fluid according to the Honda maint spec...no slippage, ever. Just bad luck...sorry..if the Manual conversion is truly only $1500 I would go that route. Good luck!
