Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
Hello all! I’ve got a 2000 civic sedan, 1.6 auto. Car wondered HORRIBLE when I got it, previous owner put new upper and lower ball joints in and outer tie rods trying to solve the problem I think. I got the car, paid for an alignment- no change, I then put on new upper and lower control arms, rack and pinion and a rust free subframe. Still wanders left and right goin down the road.
The other thing that I find odd is that when I jack the car up and let the front suspension hang free, both wheels toe out, when you let the jack down and the car is under its own weight, they toe straight again.
My steering wheel is tight with zero play, but for some reason the front wheels feel like they are trying to follow the grooves in the road.
Every bushing, bearing looks and feels solid. Any help would be awesome!

re: Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
coilover? how much is it lowered?
google "bump-steer"
depending on how low, need to either find different parts or lift car a bit
what aftermarket control arms? doe it change suspension geometry?
for non-modified suspension, I would have said rotate front/rear tires, but looks more like a poorly done suspension modification for the sake of aesthetics, whoever did that
suspension dynamics are very complicated.

it IS like bump steer, but it did it when it was stock. I’ve rotated tires before the coilovers and didn’t make a difference. Control arms are Amazon but have adjustable camber. From bone stock to lowered on coilovers it’s still there.

22 year old car - r u sure all parts are stock, no one swapped in parts from other honda models? not sure, but some uses integra parts?
re: Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
Every part I put on was correct for the car. I don’t understand why the wheels toe out when jacked up? I’ve never had a car do that. I don’t know what makes it wander all over even with EVERYTHING under the front being brand new.

re: Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
is the tie-rod on top or bottom of the knuckle?
people uses the reversed tie-rod at the bottom to correct bump-steer when lowering the car too much

re: Wandering steering STILL!! [solved]
you never know what was done in older cars... sorry for asking so many questions, but it is needed for diagnosing through the internet, and so many things can have been done to the car that is hard to figure out
never assume they are in stock form
in the end, you could have even found out that the steering rack is not the one supposed to be in the car
