2000 civic engine removal
2000 civic engine removal
I need to replace rear seal on my 1.6L. Also want to put in new oil pump and oil pan gasket along with changing timing belt and water pump. Since I have to remove the transmission to get to the rear seal; I want to just remove both the engine and transmission as a single unit. I have heard it is possible to remove both through the hood instead of removing it from under the frame. I have removed side facing engines with no problems. All have had lifting brackets and photos where to hook up the chains to remove safely. I can not locate any lifting points nor am I able to find any manuals that specify engine removal from the top of the hood. I have limited mobility so the reason for wanting to remove engine and transmission from top.
All suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: 2000 civic engine removal
Can't speak for a 6thgen D16, but my 7thgen D17 was able to come out as an engine/tranny assembly through the hood. What I used for lifting points were the motor mount bolts. Figured they're designed to support the engine anyways, they'd be safe to lift the engine, too.
I disassembled the engine pretty much down to the block, head, valve cover, and transmission (intake, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, alternator all removed from engine bay, AC compressor and PS pump stayed in because I didn't feel like bleeding PS or evacuating/refilling AC system). Removed condensers and fans for extra clearance. Took the hood off entirely, which was cake because it's all of 4 bolts (and I had a 17lb carbon fiber hood). Bolted the engine hoist chain using the motor mount bolts/bolt holes (use whichever ones you have easy access to) and lift slow
Once I had it out, I was able to switch up mounting points without killing myself or damaging anything so I could separate the trans from the engine.
