Yet another failed start thread 00 EX MT
Yet another failed start thread 00 EX MT
I need help with diagnosis. I am suspecting ECU, but open to anything. ECU does not provide spark pulse in dizzy or volt pulse in cyl 1 injector. I'd like some help quick, since the Civic (kid's car) is blocking MY car in the driveway.
TL;DR: My 2000 EX (6th generation) MT coupe 167k miles is sitting in my driveway and cranks but does not start. Last week CEL was lit and gave 'bad O2 sensor' code, CEL is now dark and reader shows no codes. Drove fine until yesterday when the engine died while idling at a traffic light on level ground with a full tank of gas. I got it towed home.
CRANK: Yes, remanufactured starter 3 months ago.
FUEL: Main (master) relay checks OK: it clicks in ON and START, contacts read less than 1 ohm when each relay is energized, resistors and diodes are OK, and I reflowed the main relay board solder. I replaced the fuel pump, but it did not solve this problem. Fuel pump makes the right noise when I turn the key (I think replacement fuel pump is OK). Fuel injector for cyl 1 does not pulse (no fuel injection command from ECU), checked with voltmeter and LED tester.
SPARK: Distributor is 2 months old, and I tried a new store-bought distributor as well. Pulled two spark plug wires (one at a time) and put a wire to the battery negative, found no spark in START from either dizzy terminal. Dizzy black/yellow wire goes 12V when key is ON or START (indicates power ON at dizzy). Yellow/green wire in both distributors are 12V solid (no pulse) in START (no spark command pulse from ECU). I tried a second ECU that gives P1607 code.
Compression: Unknown. Probably MILD vacuum leak since the brake booster stiffens about 2 minutes after the car shuts off. I'll go get a gauge and check manifold pressure if it helps. Valve cover gasket wasn't put back on well, it leaks oil everywhere. I'll fix it with the next timing belt/water pump replacement.
Background: My 2000 EX coupe has had intermittent hesitant idle for months. It was improved by burping the coolant system, but still occasionally idles rough. Prior to the event above, it died in the driveway, and restarted when I kept the key in START while pulling and replacing the fuel pump fuse, which is why I thought it might be the fuel pump. Fuel filter is 3 months old (probably not clogged). Previous owner did a stereo mod and left a few parts missing (nuts and bolts here and there) and changed the timing belt. My only mod is installing a new manual steering rack from Detroit Axle and removing the power steering pump.
I can't think of anything else helpful to include here. By all means, ask any more questions that would help.

These cars don't like aftermarket distributors, do you still have the original?
can also grab one from a junkyard

OP here. In my case, the timing belt (which the previous owner said had "just been changed" is now missing. I am assuming that the water pump seized. I will be replacing the pump and the belt this week, in addition to whatever valves may be bent, and the valve cover gasket.

Re: Yet another failed start thread 00 EX MT
So the car failed to start while in your driveway and now the timing belt has suddenly disappeared?
Re: Yet another failed start thread 00 EX MT
I think there were two unrelated issues:
1) The water pump is probably the original water pump with 167k miles. The pump (or tensioner) probably seized. It doesn't matter which or why, I am now going to replace the water pump and tensioner.
2) The fuel pump was old and tired, so to speak. The only relation is that they are both probably original components in an abused 22yo car. I previously thought they were related because they happened so close together (only two months apart), while the car sat dead in my driveway for one of those months.
As a side note, there is no apparent problem with either the distributor or ECU.
