Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
Hey I have a big question, I was driving and my battery light came on. So the alternator belt came off. Got to replacing it when I got home and noticed the harmonic balancer was loose. Got another one from parts store, got it off and noticed the splines on nub of the crank shaft was a little worn and on the balancer completely worn.
I replaced it and put the keyway in and torque to 130lbs. And the car started but ran rough, I cut it off, and then tried to crank again.
Now it won’t crank at all but will turn over.
Did I just throw the timing off ? Hopefully that’s all, or did I just ruin my motor ?

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
What codes are you getting? If you can’t see codes, check your alternator bolts to see if they’re tight. You may have shorted the ecu. You shouldn’t have done anything that would affect the timing.
Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
The check engine light is on but i thought it was just the sensor.
I don’t have a scanner and now it won’t crank in my driveway.
the alternator bolt will make it not run if it isn’t tighten properly?
I guess I can buy a scanner and see what codes it is throwing

You can get a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth dongle on Amazon for like $20. Paired with the $5 Torque app you are able to read and clear engine faults.
Did the crankshaft position sensor get damaged or unplugged?

Car won’t crank and is in my driveway so I can’t get it to a parts store.
I may order one of these off of Amazon to see what codes it is throwing.

WIFI models did mess up my phone connection (S10), so i chose a bluetooth
i preferred to get a mid-point price one. Not too cheap, not too pricey (Reason I say this: there are tons of offerings)

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
Thank you, first thing I’m gonna try in the morning is line the harmonic balancer up with the v, and take the top of the timing cover off to see if it says up and the lines match up with the block.
if that doesn’t fix it then I’m gonna order the reader and see what codes are thrown.
it’s gonna be difficult decision if I need a new motor or just sell it as is needing a motor.

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
Sorry, define what is your understanding of crank and turn over?
Confused...both can be understood as the engine spins
Alternator bolts loose will make voltage unsteady, which tends to fry ECU's in 7th gen cars. [this is just a guess items, don't consider it's fried until you test other items first]. The harmonic balancer could act up as loose alternator bolts, so the possibility still exists.

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
The motor will turn over and only catch like it’s about to crank every so often. Like it’s out of time or something.
weird thing is before I took off the harmonic balancer it ran perfect.
Im gonna check the tdc tomorrow morning and tighten up the alternator bolts and turn it over.
hopefully it cranks and runs like it did before.
that would make my day.

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
Okay, I understand now. “Turn over” and “crank” mean the same thing. It could be your crank position sensor isn’t plugged in properly. Give it some gas when cranking next time.

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
when the engine runs without you holding the key, it is called "engine starts" or "fires up".
just realized, but you posted on 6th gen. Assuming you have a 6th gen car, the ECU frying is common on the 7th gen, not 6th gen.

while you wait for the OBD reader, retrace work done, wiggle the wiring to see if you did not knock any sensor/wiring out of position. Crankshaft position sensor, etc
Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
I will check connections around the alternator, ac, and power steering. & of course the balancer.
That’s the only work I’ve done.
thank you for recommending

Re: Loose harmonic balancer replaced and now won’t crank
So I checked the connections, everything seems connected good.
I took the top of the timing cover off and when the marks are level with the block & the up is in the upward position the harmonic balancer is not lined up with the V on the block.
it’s off probably 3inches.
how do I fix this to where the markings on the harmonic balancer matchup to the V on the block along with the timing wheel marks and up??
I must have rotated the harmonic balancer too far in reinstall and threw it out of time some how ?

Pics if you can. Sounds like the engine may have jumped time.
