My 98 CX didn't come with a tach but I found a cluster with one in a scrap yard 6 years ago, plugged it in and it worked like a charm.
Until earlier today when I was sitting in traffic and noticed it was sitting at 2500 rpm despite me being at idle. It would fluctuated between 2500-3000 for the rest of that drive, then when I cut the car off it spun all the way to pointing straight down. Now when I start the car it pegs out underneath the peg at 0
I checked the tach test plug with a voltmeter and it has 13.8v at idle to 12.7v revved up. Idk how useful this is but I think that at least shows that I have a signal there.
I tried taking the cluster out to see if there was anything obvious behind it, any loose connections, maybe unplug it and plug it back in, but I didn't find anything and it's still doing the same.
At this point is it basically my tach is dead and I need to find another one or is there something I missed? I don't have a CEL and the car otherwise runs fine.
