1999 VTech O2 Sensor Resistance and Schematic?
1999 Honda Civic. HA D16Y8 45673278. I threw an O2 Sensor code, so replaced it with one from a good source. Not from the dealer, but the next best thing, an NGK 24631. The sensor that arrived was only 8 Ohms (heater). My Chilton's manual said it should be between 10 Ohms and 40 Ohms, or it is defective. I contacted NGK and they assured me that 8 Ohms is correct. An 8 Ohm heater would be 18 Watts at 12V, 21 Watts at 13V, and that seems pretty high to me! (unless PWM regulated, which it might be). I went ahead and installed this 8 Ohm O2 Sensor, and that did not clear the code. Then I started real troubleshooting. Looks like the sensor gets "12V" from the dash fuse bank and ground is to be provided via the Computer. As far as I can tell, the ground side is where the problem is. Unfortunately I have seen at least 3 different schematics for this model, and don't know which to trust. So I avoided that level of detail and simply tested every single wire to the Computer for connection to this O2 Sensor Heater ground terminal (harness unplugged on both sides). I could not find a connection between this ground lead and the many computer wires. I would conclude that the wire is broken in the harness (or at a mid-point connector), and simply bypass it, if not for these issues: Without a schematic that I can count on, I am hesitant to be this precise about anything. 2) If I am wrong, and there is a connection to the computer, then it could be that the drive (i.e. transistor) for this leg in the computer has burned out, and with the heater being (possibly) lower resistance than spec, even if I replaced or fixed the computer, it might just burn out again. There are just too many unknowns. Would I be able to get a schematic I can count on from the dealer? Is there anywhere I can get a true spec for that O2 Sensor heater resistance? (A note for anyone removing one of these oxygen sensors: The exhaust has to be hot to unscrew these things. They actually say that in my manual, but I missed it, and had to learn it the hard way.)
