CEL p0500 on a 97 civic ex

my speedometer stopped working and i got the engine light a few months ago and immediately changed the speed sensor out for a new one. that worked for a couple weeks until the engine light came back on and speedometer would only bounce up from 0-60 for a quick second and drop back down. now it doesnt even bounce up and i still have the engine light after replacing the sensor again. how would i go about seeing whats wroong or testing if anything else is faulty?
