98 civic mechanical noise? [finally solved]

Hi guys I’m back again unfortunately :/

remember the engine rebuild? It’s still running good but I have a noise that I can’t figure out. It’s really bothering me as usually I can figure these things out.

car idles and drives perfectly fine but sometimes I hear a metallic noise. Almost like kicking an empty soda can or maybe sounds like taking a wrench and hitting the exhaust pipe? The noise is intermittent but only happens when putting the car into drive or reverse or when moving from a complete stop.

ALL suspension and steering is brand new front and back, torqued to appropriate spec, and has had alignment done. All motor mounts and transmission mounts are also new when engine was replaced.

double and triple checked all suspension, steering and motor mounts. All tight and still torqued to specs. I even raised all 4 tires off the ground so the car was “floating”. Still makes the noise. One thing that was at least consistently making the noise was when I put the car into drive and let the tires spin a little and then hit the brakes, the noise would happen every time.

I’m wondering maybe it’s an issue with the torque convertor or transmission itself? One of the bolts that I put back that attaches the drive plate to the torque converter was longer than the rest. Yes even those were torqued to 8 ft/lb

I can try to make a video but it won’t be today. Wondering if anyone else had experienced anything similar like this.

On the exhaust manifold? It’s never been an issue until after the engine rebuild. I can remove it today and verify.

Just give all the heat shields a few smacks with a rubber mallet, if one is loose it will make noise

I’d rather just remove it and test drive. Only two 10mm bolts and the o2 sensor. I don’t recall any other heat shields under the car.

I completely understand. I used to live in Midwest. Now
in California. Must better without the rust.

This got a chuckle out of me. Any exhaust bolt I get off without it breaking is like winning the lottery.

take to a place with a lifter and have someone under to check where it is coming from?

I did that today. I lifted the car in the driveway on all four corners and had someone inside the car with it in drive and hitting the brakes to trigger the noise. Sounds like it’s dead center between the engine and transmission. I just can’t pinpoint the exact source.

I’ll try to make some time soon to lift it again and get a helper so I can make a video. Maybe it will help identify the noise.

I don’t have a helper at the moment but you can hear the noise pretty clearly after I put the car into drive. It was doing it fairly consistently yesterday in both reverse and drive but now only in drive.

re: 98 civic mechanical noise? [finally solved]

That came out of nowhere

If you think it's coming between the engine and transmission, take the cover off for the bottom of the torque converter. Maybe you will see something.

hi I had some time today. Removes the cover and it didn’t really help but the steering wheel got turned by my helper and I started hearing some clicking noise maybe from the axles when wheel is turned. They are less than one year old and under warranty. Just need to find a store that has them in stock so I can swap them out.

Any thoughts on this? pretty sure axles aren’t supposed to click.

going crazy to try and find this issue. I started looking and checking all my parts that I ordered for this car. Only thing I found was that I ordered motor mounts for
the CVT transmission instead of regular. The transmission lower right does look quite a bit different. This might cause the noise?

replaced all 5 mounts today. Issue still happening. At this point it’s gotta be something inside the transmission? Idk what else to look for.

Start with the flex plate and torque converter hopefully you find something there before you have to take the trans apart

ok no problem. I will remove the cover on bottom of engine and take a look at flex plate and torque converter again. Maybe I missed something last time. At this point I’m hoping that is the issue so I can just fix it already.

I have the covers off and looking at the torque converter and flex plate. Im not seeing anything unusual. No warped plate, no cracks, Bends, no signs of scraping. Nothing. There is one bolt that is longer than the rest that mates the flex plate to torque converter that I got back when I got my rebuilt engine back. Doesn’t seem like it’s causing an issue. Any concerns if I remove that bolt just to see if it helps at all?

You could try temporarily, if it doesn't look like its rubbing on anything then it probably isn't the issue
