07 Civic Coupe Airbag Replacement/Reset
07 Civic Coupe Airbag Replacement/Reset
Hello,
I was recently pushed off the road as a result of a hit and run, causing the driver-side curtain and seat airbags to deploy. Since there is minimal damage to the rest of the car, I've gone ahead and decided to repair and replace the deployed airbag and SRS/airbag module, but I want to be fully aware of what I'm going into before I begin.
So from my understanding, if I buy and install a new curtain airbag, a new seat, manually release the seatbelt tensioner lock, and send in my airbag module to get the codes cleared, the airbag light should go off and the car be good? Are there any other steps that I need to take? This sounds extremely simple, so I feel like I'm missing something. The only light I have on the dash is the airbag light. Theres an identical parts with a blown head gasket pretty close to me, so I'm hoping to just grab most of everything off of that, but mail in my airbag module. There is very little damage to the body, so I don't believe I need to worry about the crash sensors.
Thanks

Airbags are the only thing on a car that I refuse to screw with. Do with that information what you will.
But yeah, the module will need to be reset, but functional airbags for my '01 were like $400 if I recall correctly.

Have to send the SRS module in to be reset or replaced is probably the most difficult part. Airbags can be dangerous though, just be careful and you should have no issue. Some precautions from the service manual before you start replacing parts:
- Except when performing electrical inspections, always turn the ignition switch OFF, and disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
- Use replacement parts which are manufactured to the same standards and quality as the original parts. Do not install used SRS parts. Use only new parts when making SRS repairs.
- Carefully inspect any SRS part before you install it.
- Do not install any part that shows signs of being dropped or improperly handled, such as dents, cracks, or deformation.
- Before removing any of the SRS parts (including the disconnection of the connectors), always disconnect the SRS connector.
- Use only a digital multimeter to check the system. If it is not a Honda multimeter, make sure its output is 10 mA (0.01 A) or less when switched to the lowest value in the ohmmeter range. A tester with a higher output could cause accidental deployment and possible injury.

yeah, an airbag kicking in out of nowhere in the highway is like an poorly latched hood that suddenly opens in the highway.
At the least the hood, you can see from under it when it crashes in the windshield.

I honestly don't know what it means. I would guess unplug the airbag before trying to remove. Battery should still be disconnected beforehand.
8th gen service manual if you're interested. I was in "Driving Support & Restraints" > "SRS" > "SRS Precautions and Procedures" but feel free to look around in the other sections.

it is intended to avoid the bag inflating while trying to remove it.
disconnect battery to remove all power.
if by chance there is any charge to the module, it could trigger the bag to inflate. Disconnect it first
then you are OK to stand in front of the bag to remove it
