Rep Power: 0 Does this happen all the time while you drive are just when you start the car up?
Could be a couple of things;
Defective gauge
Sticking thermostat
Fan intermitinly turning on and off
blockage in the cooling system
I'd take it in to a shop ASAP, you don't want to overheat the engine to many times.

Rep Power: 400 Thats not a reason to go in for 20K... thats just a reason to go in and get that fixed under warranty. 20K checkup isn't going to address that problem.
Look down the back of the radiator and make sure there is coolant in the reservoir and its between the min and max lines. I had to add a little back in at about 16K.... its not burning it, it just happens. You may have run it a little low. But if its spiking like that, it's probably a bad thermostat. Same thing happened in my dad's car. Get it done under warranty.
