Question High RPM at 80MPH

I have a 02 civic sedan (auto). All stocks no mods with 28K. Did all scheduled service on time.

When I go at 90MPH, RPM 4.50, 80MPH, the RMP 3.75. At 70MPH, the RMP is 3.0. Why is that our 7th Gen civics run so high on the RPM? It really sounds like my civic can't go over 100MPH! At 90MPH, my engine is already roaring as if it topped speed and can't go any more???....

I drove a 94 civic (auto), I went over 100MPH, RPM 4.0 and stayed for 15sec. but the engine was shaking like hell. Now I don't recommend anyone to go try with various speed. I just want to know why are civics RPM so high?

haha.

No. This is pure D4.

I would have known if it was in D3 because it wouldn't allowed me to go over 50MPH even if I redline it.

I wouldn't wory about it because 4 cylinders always rev high at high speed, they're designed that way. My 90 Mustang GT runs about 1800 rpm @ 80 mph but the motor red lines @ 5000 rpm.

For my EX 5-spd, at 70mph I'm doing about 3400rpms. So yours sounds about right I think for an automatic.

ok i did a lil test on my way home from a friends house. i have an '02 4dr EX with a/t.. on D3 i was able to hit 90mph at aound 6000rpm. and when i hit 100mph i was on 4th gear at about 3500rpm. so there might be something wrong with ur gears, im not for sure though.

It's geared so high because they have to match the power curve up with the required "roal load power" of different situations.

If they geared the vehicle to loft at 2000 rpm @ 70mph you would need to shift every time you came across a sizable hill or had the vehicle loaded at full GVW.

Likewise think about the top speed of the vehicle, I forget exactly, but the VTEC point is around 4400 RPM (around 90MPH) and the car gains power linearly from there on... So at about 90MPH if the car were at 3500 RPM instead of 4400 RPM it would not have the required power to go faster...

Does that make sense?

What I'm saying here is that if it requires 60 horsepower to go 90 mph, and the car is geared so that it only makes 60 horsepower @ 3500 RPM your top speed in the highest gear becomes 90MPH - which is obviously pathetic....

No. I have a 02 EX Sdn and I can get to at least 75mph in D3 before the car gets into 6.5 rpm. I recall dropping it into D3 doing about 80 on the freeway, was a mistake, but still it wasn't that rough for the car.

And I have done about 128 in my car on a flat strait road.

I know you said that your car is stock, but most likely you wouldn't have any aftermarket gauges would you? Because I know the aftermarket RPM markings are incorrect. If not, then I don't know bud...

ak can only hope to improve
Autos:

3000-3200rpm @ 80mph

Topspeed 115-120mph.

If you're doing 3750rpm, then your belt might be slipping or ya..there's obviously something wrong with your motor.

ak: what belt is slipping?

there's nothing wrong with the gearing except if you turned off your overdrive....honda engines loves high revs.
