Engine whine...

After 16K miles on my Civic the engine has started to whine badly. Before it was so quite...

Any ideas? I don't know how to decribe it other than a whining sound. It increases/decrases with the rev, but stops when at a steady RPM.

Could be lots of things but first, check your power steering fluid, if its really low then you have a leak. But if the fluid is fine then try to pin point where the noise is coming from. It could be a power steering pump, A/C compressor, water pump, automatic transmission, etc. Then reply with more info, or take it to the dealer.

I bet my money on a a/c compressor. My previous car made loud whine, sounded like a loud turbocharger spooling, but sound slowly disappeared with steady RPM(like hwy driving). but that annoying sound returned when i hit the street. When my mechanic took off the a/c compressor belt sound disappeared completely, granted i had to drove w/o ac for that summer but it was worth it.
