My buddy owns a 99 Civic EX (I know this is 7th gen, but please...) and is sick of being beat because it's an automatic . He is intersted in dropping a manual transmission into it by any means. How much does this usually run? Do you go to Honda to do it, and will it be a brand new transmission, or will it be used? Mainly, how much will it cost?

Well, dropping in an auto, it may be cheaper and better just to sell the auto and find an manual. I'm not sure how much it is for a Civic, but an Accord is about $2500 and up. There is a lot of work involved plus you have to get the basic parts, and tranny. I only know that tuner shops may do such things.

is it possible to convert the auto tranny in the civic to a triptronic (spelling?) auto? would be great having an auto with an option of full auto or clutchless shifting

i dont see any point of having a car without three pedals. never have never will. i know it would cost alot though to get a manual tranny though.

big waste of money. if he's gonna swap transmissions, swap engines also. a d16 ain't gonna be all that much faster with a manual

I second that. He'd be better off putting his money into forced induction on his automatic than to spend all that money just on a tranny swap.
