windshield glass too soft?

The front windshield on my '01 LX (Canada) has way too many minute stone chips for a car with only 32,000 km.

My '92 Accord with over 225,000 km had about as much damage on its front windshield, and I rarely ever drive on unpaved roads.

Is it possible that the glass on my '01 Civic is softer, more prone to damage? Has anyone noticed something similar?

Actually, I do have two chips already (20000 miles) and my del sol with 65,000 didn't have any, until I broke it careening through some trees....

Same here...I have a habit of tailgating and those stupid trucks throw up stones..well, this was like not even a pebble but hit with the force of a boulder...now I have a crack in my lower center windshield below the windshield wipers...sucks!

I have 40,000kms on my 2002 Si Coupe, and the front of the car is rockchipped all to hell. The windshield is cracked along the bottom, and up the drivers side, and I have very little paint left on the front dam and severe chipping on the hood. I'll snap a pic sometime soon for you guys. It's pretty bad.

And no, I

- don't drive on dirt roads

- follow too close behind semi-trucks in the winter

I think the chipping of windshields and paint up here in Canada has gotten a lot worse since the road maintenance was privatized - they don't put "sand" on the roads anymore, it's more like gravel. I pulled over on a BC pass last week, got out, and actually looked at the crap they were putting on the road. I couldn't find a single one smaller than the tip of my pinky.

My previous vehicle, 99 GMC Sierra 4x4 Ext Cab also had bad chipping - had to replace the windshield after one winter. Looks like I'll have to replace the Si's 'shield too.

Ugh ugh ugh.

Yeah, you would actually think local governments would think of the effects before they put that stuff down...I have the same problem as well as a problem with the "cheap" way of paving....tar and gravel...those are a lot sharper and pointier than pebbles! It really sucks...it's impossible to keep a nice car anymore...
