3rd gear.

For a while now, when I shift to 3rd gear the gear slightly grinds and I knew eventually something would start to feel wrong with the shifter.

3rd feels really weird. When I shift fast into 3rd gear from 2nd it now feels like the gears are grinding but they don't sound like it (just not as loud but much quieter)... and it just doesn't feel smooth anymore even coming out of 3rd (edit: when downshifting to 2nd) and now to prevent it I just have to shift slower. What could be the problem? I don't wanna shift slower! The funny thing is now that this has happened the gears don't grind anymore. Anyone know what's up?

You're probably failing to remember that your tranny will be a little rough when you first start your car sometimes considering the fluid is cold and not as slippery.

That has nothing to do with the car being cold. This happens while I'm delivering pizzas on the job so the car is warm the entire time and that's when it's happening.

Can't be that with me. I wear Lugz or either Nike's. When I wear my Lugz, that clutch just about hits the floor and if I move up too closely, then it's uncomfortable. If I change to the Nike shoes, then I'm considerably too far. I can still shift just as fine but I still feel like I'm not close enough.

Do you drive your car hard? (e.g. redline a lot) If you're running around for hours at a time delivering pizzas, then there's a good chance your transmission is going to heat up and that could cause synchro wear. Gears start to grind when your synchros start to go. Unless it's grinding in all gears, then it might be your clutch.

I redline the car not too much, but occasionally. I shift between 3,500 to 4,500 RPMs.

Perhaps it is? Well... if it is my synchros, what can I do about it?

Today, 5th gear is now doing the same thing. Now I don't even wanna mess with 3rd gear.

If you guys fast shift often then don't cheap out...replace your tranny fluid with Redline MTL or MT90. Then you'll have a slick shifting tranny and you can shift fast all day without killing the syncro.

Thanks for the info. ( though I don't shift quickly ). I'll be doing AutoX next month though, so maybe I should look into it.

Thank you, thank you! And I like the idea about changing the transmission fluid. Perhaps this'll help those peeps who have issues shifting down to 2nd? I just shift to 2nd quicker.

Question: What's the difference between MTL and MT90?

MTL and MT90 are just different fluid viscosities<sp>. Use MTL for the Honda tranny is good for year round. If you never see snow and visit the track every weekend then use MT90. Two 1 quart bottle is more than enough for a drain and fill.

Hmm, well I just learned a lil' something about tranny fluid and gear fluid. The Redline stuff is expensive! But I don't know if it'll help. After I take the car back to the dealer I'll see if it's worth a try.

Yes they are more expensive than the regular stuff. But consider you only need 2 bottles and they last 60000 miles in normal driving. It's one of the cheapest useful mod you can do to your tranny.

Edit: How much do they go for down there? I'm in Toronto and it's about $16 CAD ($10 US) a bottle....

It's just an intake. It voids nothing as an engine bolt on. It only voids the warranty if it causes the problem of whatever it can cause a problem to (which is the engine and the only evil thing a CAI can do is hydrolock the engine). That goes with almost all mods and it depends on which warranty you're talking about... engine, transmission... suspension... paint? Even though that's what the LAW states, every dealer is different about mods so it's best to ask them before hand on their take on modifications. Don't forget to be specific with questions.

Also when you bought your car (if you got it new) you should've gotten a warranty handbook and that helps. But just ask the dealer.
