problems with first gear and reverse
This is my first stick so I don't know if this is normal and I bought the car a year old so I don't know how it drove new. It seems like it's always hard to get it into reverse and I usually have to put it in another gear before it'll go in reverse and it makes a loud noise when I back up. Also, sometimes I can't get the car in first. It feels like something's blocking it, it won't even go partially in. Sometimes I'll fight with it and it'll go in most of the time when it happens have to start in 2nd. Don't really know what to look for, could use any info on this and what to keep a eye on with a manual.
If you're trying to downshift into 1st, then yeah, you're going to have a little resistance. But if you're sitting still trying to get it into 1st, then something is wrong. Reverse can be difficult to get into sometimes, just takes practice.
My 6th gen developed the 1st gear blockage problem after years of abuse. I had to put it in 2nd, and then slide into 1st. I think if I were you I'd take it to your dealership and have them check it out just to make sure everything's ok.
you are not supposed to reverse while moving otherwise you will grind your gears. so make sure ur car is still before u shift into reverse. im not sure if thats what u did...maybe i misunderstood what u said. for me, its tough to move into reverse sometimes also. as for the first gear problem that you're having...there should be resistance around 7-8mph.
HEY LES...
I"M having the exact problem as u did. I posted it up before but i guess not alot of people noticed.
The problem with not getting into first is because there is a thing that prevents u to downshift to first. Your car has to be slow enough or stopped in order to put it in first. It's a good thing
And the other problem I had is not being ablee to get into first at all even when i'm stopped.
I have no idea why, but that problem only happens like once every few months =)

If you're having problems getting it into reverse, then with the clutch in put the tranny in 1st, then without releaseing the clutch, pull it out and it should go directly into reverse, they're linked. If a problem in 1st, let off the brake and let the car roll an inch or so, that should fix the problem.
FWIW I've not had any difficulties with the tranny in my 02 lx sedan, It is so far a fabulous transmission. (I've only got 4k on the car so far)
