Finally found the most annoying rattle

I have finally found the most annoying rattle in my car. I thought it was the "famous" rear deck rattle but it turns out to be coming from either the sunroof or the courtesy light for the rear seats. The rattle does not come from the moonroof itself but from behind, exactly were the window rolls when you completely open it.

I was wondering if anybody has taken apart the roof? Is it hard to do? I´m giving it my best shot at fixing it this weekend, this rattle has been annoying me for months.

Any suggestions on taking the pieces appart? I was planning on getting some styrofoam layers in between to shut it up..

I don't have a rattle from the moonroof, but I do have that famous sqeauking sound coming from the rubber seal around it, when the roof is closed. I lubed it with some silicone and it seems to help.

Are you sure thats not the problem you're having? I would be careful about taking the roof liner apart, you may cause new rattles to appear ...

I have the rattle in the sunroof just above my head. It's the ceiling vibrating aganst aganst something just above it. You talk about annoying. However, when I push up on the ceiling in that spot, it stops. So, there is abviously a tiny space in between the two layers. I am going to take some foam weather stripping that used for windows and put that in there.

Mbow, I've had the same problem with my car since I got it. Dealer was no help, claimed they couldn't hear anything. But seriously, it's right above your head between the door jamb and the moonroof, correct? So far I've tried pulling back the rubber where the roof meets the jamb and shoving pieces of felt in there with adhesive to kind of shim the headliner away from the roof, but that didn't do much.

whoa I think I can actually help here.

Alright so I had this annoying rattle coming from my headliner area... sounded like it was rear deck but it wasnt! Then it started sounding like it was around the rear window area and finally I discovered that pressing just behind the dome light on the roof actually stopped the rattle completely.

It took several trips to honda to get them to finally hear it... one honda dealer authorized installing foam up above the headliner but that didn't fix it. It wasn't until just last week that the honda service manager actually HEARD the rattle for himself and thus, they finally approved removing the headliner for an actual look at what is up there. allow me to reiterate what is on my service summary:

"CAUSE: LAB 842099 3.4 HRS DEF 042 RATTLING BUZZ NOISE CONT B07 RATTLING
NOISE FP# 62100-S5D-A00ZZ DSM APPROVAL REQUIRED FOR TIME

FC: 042/B07
PART#: 62100-S5D-A00ZZ

RE AND RE HEAD LINER TRACE NOISE TO CROOS BEAM ADJUST BEAM"

I asked my honda dealer to translate that and he basically told me there was a beam up there that is really close to another peice of metal... and they were coming together to make the rattle... I'm not entirely certain how they fixed it but my car smelled of silicon type of smell for about 2 days but after testing and driving all over for nearly a week now.. I can safely say the rattle is GONE!!! (smell is gone, too )

Thanks Brill, I´m going to print the info and take it to the dealer, maybe they will finally fix it (I think I have told them about the rattle about 4 times now and all they say is they cant find it).

Amazing how such little insignificances can screw up your ride, but this thing can be so annoying.

just keep in mind your dealer can't do ANYTHING without hearing/seeing the problem for themselves... especially not authorize 3.4 hours to rip out the headliner and mess around up there... its pretty standard protocol. I can understand why they do it but it makes it tough for them to fix stuff like intermittent rattling

OK, first round.

I have attempted to fix the rattle by squeezing styrofoam pieces between the headliner and the roof. I stuck some rigth where the liner meets with the rear window (around that little black thing for the antena).

Seems like I won round # 1 but dont claim victory yet. This morning, very cloudy, little mist but not cold, rattle didnt appear. I´ll have to wait to see if the beast has been defeated since you all know the rattle is quite intermittent. But so far except for the temperature, the climate was the usual "rattling" weather.

Lets hope, maybe I wont need to take the thing apart to try to fix it
