What would a leaking strut affect? Just curious

Hi Yeall,

So Honda finally fixed all of my interior rattles but while it was in there they found out that the passenger/front strut was leaking...

I am just curious as to what this would affect... like would it affect handling/steering? Just wondering, that is all

Thanks,
Brill

You may not notice a difference right away, but after more liquid leaks out, that corner with the leaking strut will be more bouncy and feel very loose going over bumps, along with a loss of steering response when going over rough roads.

EDIT: forgot to add that it may "bottom out" too - meaning that the strut may compress completely with a thud in big dips in the road, or going over speed bumps. BTW, I had to wait 6 weeks for my replacement strut back in April... they are all on backorder.

I didn't realize that the strut leaking was a common problem. Althought, I have a leaking strut too. They said it would take a week to get it in and I think I am going to ask them to replace both of the back ones as I feel that the compesation from the leaking one has effected the good one as well. My ride is real bouncy and the steering response is depleted as well... BTW they did say they were on back order.

I looked above my drivers side wheel and saw a strange looking thing on the coil. It was like a beige looking substance. Could it be a crack or is it some kind of thick fluid? Could this be a result of the "bad strut" problem. I have the knocking sound anytime I hit a bump with any substance. I am taking it in next week. Does anyone know exactly what this is?

those sound like the classic symptoms of a leaking strut

There are a few posts previous stating that it looks like even when the struts were replaced that the problem came back. Has anyone had them replaced to their satisfaction?

I wonder why this is such a common problem? Especially the front left strut, that seems to be the most problematic. Could this be a design flaw? I wonder if they had kept the old double wishbone setup if this problem would have never reared its ugly head.

Most people I have asked are shocked that at 16000 miles I have a blown strut. They said they should be good for at least 50000.

hmmmm....this certainly doesnt seem like a general fault with the strut since i have had my civic since November 2000 and its got 42,000 miles on it....i dont think any of my struts are blown yet.

If your struts haven't blown within the first year (on a stock car), chances are you don't have a defective strut.

But if you lower the car with new springs and keep the stock struts, then chances are they will blow. But that won't be Honda's fault.
