rear suspension in big trouble
Hi everyone, I´m having trouble trying to fix my rear suspension. It all started with squeaking when the car was almost new, nothing too bad, just squeaking in the morning when it was cold, then it got worse, the car squeaked constantly, but still the performance was OK.
I will take the car to dealer this friday for the third time. First time they just greased the bushings and tightened the suspension, fix worked for about 5 days. Second time, they said they need to replace the bushings so they put an order (don´t have them on stock), but this time when I got the car back, the squeaking is the least of the problems, the car just feels terrible, it handles awfully in corners and the back bounces like if it was mustang (i.e. no independent suspension), and the general feel is as if the car had very old struts.
Now, I know about the leaking struts problems (which happen mostly on the front, not the rear) and I´ve told the dealer, but he says my sturts are fine (which I doubt). I was wondering if there is some way I can know if my struts are leaking.
The car will be at the dealer again on friday, but I really want to get to get it fixed this time, because I can tolerate the squeaking, but when it affects the ride then it can become pretty dangerous. You think just replacing all the bushings will fix it?
Just wondering if anybody has had this problem and how did you fix it? The dealer is in quite a good disposition to fix it, but now I doubt its capacity. Thanks everyone, I´m at the point of considering replacing the car if this is not fixed, after the explorer accidents I don´t want to ride a car with a damaged suspension.

nope, my suspension is stock. the only change I made was the rims and tires, but the suspension was already screwed up before the tire-rim change. Today the dealer is changing all the stuff, I really hope this fixes the problem, otherwise I´m seriously considering trading the car because of the risk.
My best friend´s mom had a terrible accident in her saturn a couple weeks ago because the car had rear suspension problems, she lost control of the car and rolle over. Fortunately she´s doing good but the scary experience no one will take it away.

Car will spend the day tomorrow at the dealer, hope they finally fix, otherwise I will end up trading the car. I think I can get a really good discount for a 02 accord, since the new one is coming in mid september. But I´m hoping the car will be OK. I love the Accord´s ride and quieteness but it lacks the personality and looks of the Civic.
Im just wondering, I read that Honda made some changes on the 02 civic particularly in the suspension, does anybody know what they were?

I was actually quite lucky because the first time I took the car it had the original wheels and tires and the dealer told me that if the problem continued they would have to change the bushings, so when I went back with the new rims he couldn´t blame it on the new ones.
I have to admit my dealer has been quite good about fixing all the little quirks in my car, the only one they have never found is that damn rear deck rattle, which loves to "hide" every time I tell the dealer to fix it.

had the same problem with my rear suspension. Took it in 4 times to get it fixed, each time it came out of the dealer quiet, but by the end of the block it'd be making slight noises, and by the end of the week it'd be back to being as bad as it was before I took it in....Finally fixed it the last time, took them 5.6 hours according to the report sheet they sent me. It's quiet now, but still rather bouncy, tho I think that's just the typical problem with the 2k1 Civic.

Your car has been returned to original tightness by replacing all the bushings?
My car is having the same troubles yours did.
High speed bumpsteer.
No stiffness in corners.
general anarchy and indirectness caused by rear driverside suspension.
I'm going through the same processes with my dealer/dealers.
My own side job mechanic is trying to convince me that the squeaking and poor handling are in my head.
Glad to hear some one got this issue remedied.
Tell me, did it seem like the car was dragging one of the wheels around like one of your rears was trailing the other?
Should I go to the dealer and suggest they change all the bushings?
Lastly, does anybody know if there any ball bearings in the rear suspension that can be damaged by adding aftermarket wheels/tires because I'm guessing that could be a cause also?

Before the bushings change the rear suspension was feeling really bad. the rear would bounce and "jump" out with even minor road imperfections.
It all got fixed after the dealer replaced the bushings. Of course the suspension setting is still very soft but its not bouncy at all.
I also got new tires and rims and surprisingly, the 16 inch wheels and tires have a softer ride.
Tell the dealer to replace the parts because in time the problem only gets worse, first its only the squeaking but then you start feeling the rear not responding, which can be dangerous.

Man
You are dead on
First it was squeaking and a slight handling imbalance.
Now its a basketcase.
I've gone through two cars for this reason.
I put the 17's on that were imbalanced but I never new exactly what they were throwing off in the suspension.
Now I have to get the dealer to warranty the work. They keep sending me away saying everything is safe. They tighten some screws but like the other dude said five days later its back to the same old problem.
I can't wait to get new bushings.
