Exclamation flooded engine?

how do i figure out why my engine is flooding?

in order to get it to start i have to hold down the gas peddle all the way in and turn the ignition multiple times.

I got a 2002 lx 1.7

could this be related my recent changing of the crank shaft sensor?

please help!

the engine light was on for both the cam shaft and crank shaft sensors (codes). car would start up fine and run for a bit before stalling issues. It would start stalling up hills and would occasionally turn off. Would sometimes not start after I'd driven it some but waiting for like 10-20 minutes would allow it to start again.

After I replaced the cam and crank shaft sensors the engine light went away and all stalling issues were gone. only problem is starting it up which became worse. when the rpm is bellow 1 it will shut off too. especially during slow turns into parking spaces, reversing out of them, and just sitting parked while running on level ground. Gotta keep the engine above 1 rpm or I risk it stalling out.

Re: flooded engine?

when you replaced the sensors did you check to see if the timing was correct?

you turn the crank by hand to line up the TDC mark, then you check to make sure the TDC mark on the cam lines up, if it does not your timing is incorrect, it could have jumped a tooth

Re: flooded engine?

I haven't got to checking the timing yet but as I started taking stuff apart...
I noticed this. all four plug tube seals are messed up and the tubes have oil in them. Could this be causing the problem? I'm going to check the timing next and report back.

i cant see the pic, but yes that could be causing spark issues,

you will need to remove the valve cover and replace the 4 seals that go around the spark plug holes, or re-seat them properly if they are still in good shape,

and clean the coils themselves of any oil, mainly on the inside of the tube

you have to be very careful those seals are properly in place when installing the valve cover

Re: flooded engine?

Okay so I took everything off. I aligned the cam shaft so it is TDC. Up is up and the two marks are level with the metal. the timing belt is nice and tight.

This is the crank. The key is at 12 oclock and I'm not 100% sure what that mark on the gear is supposed to line up with?
I took this picture also. Is that little black dot supposed to be what the mark on the gear is supposed to line up with? It looks kinda like it may be about one tooth off from lining up to it. Does it look off to you? I can get more pics if needed. Would this cause my start problem?

Re: flooded engine?

hard to tell, but assuming the cam is aligned properly (no pics of that, so i can't verify), going by the first picture of the crank, it looks like it is off by one tooth

Re: flooded engine?

So basically I have to take the timing belt off and turn the crank clockwise until it lines up with that black dot along with making sure the cam shaft is up and it's marks are aligned properly as well?

What exactly are you supposed to go by when lining up the crank?

The line on the crank gear should align with another mark on the oil pump.

If you can't locate that mark.....simply reinstall the bottom timing cover and crank pulley and align its timing mark to the pointer on the timing cover.

Once you have the crank at TDC then you can evaluate the camshaft gear position.

you can do it that way, or you can line up the crank mark properly, take the belt off and move the cam into position, either way is fine
