Hi there, I just picked up a '02 Civic SIR in pretty good shape except for the transmission. The previous owner said it needed a new clutch but I think it's way more than that. Here's the deal:Starts fine, letting the clutch out in first and nothing happens
  • Letting the clutch out in 2nd or 3rd and the worst racket you've ever heard happens, if it's only the clutch it must be shattered, I think it's more
  • Towing it home it sounded like the right drive shaft/CV are shot.

Just trying to get a heads up on what you guys think. I'm a good DIY so one thought is a used tranny (which one is in this car?) disk, pressure plate and maybe flywheel. Looking for somewhere to start reading up and a good source for the transmission if I need one?

Thanks

First post, first Honda Hi there,
Welcome. You in Canada?

Letting the clutch out in 2nd or 3rd
Watch the speedo after you let the clutch out in gear.
If the speedometer rises then it's probably an axle related problem.

Thanks, yes I'm in Sarnia. Letting the clutch out in 2nd, or 3rd makes it sound like something's coming through the floor boards! Right now looking to learn more about what gearbox is in the car and if I should open it up myself or look for another.
Thanks

Re: First post, first Honda

Figure out what's wrong first.

If you have a broken CV joint (axle), there would be no point in jacking with the gearbox at all. Remove and replace the axle.

If you have a clutch disc that broke its center out, there's still no point in opening up the transmission. Just remove the trans to get the clutch replaced and reinstall.
