P0740 & P1298, but only if I let it go to fourth gear?

First time post, long time lurker.
Just what the title says...
- 2002 EX automatic, 265000 mi, about about 80k on second transmission
- fresh trans fluid, car shifts out fine, no rpm flare at full throttle shifts, and torque converter locks in, 2500rpm at 55 mph. (when it slips and doesn't lock up all the way in overdrive 4th that number would be 2800-2900rpm)
- I put a new ELD in it and tested the TCC solenoid, 15 ohms across the two leads, and it clicks when I apply 12 volts.
- I have the single TCC solenoid, not the double solenoid I see on some other transmissions.
- Drive the car around in D3 and it will never throw the code. Put it in D and it happens. Not instantly, but never in D3
- I have been clearing codes by pulling the 40A and 80A fuses in the fuse box.

I know everyone here says just put a new tranny in all the time they see the dreaded P0740 code, but I have a feeling this might have some electronic component to the problem, or something specific to fourth gear, which is not known to be an issue here, I thought 2nd was the bad spot on these units.
I have had this car since new.

Thanks for any direction here,
Ben

I found some OLD info saying to check the TCC solenoid and the clutch pressure solenoid valves A and B for contamination. If contamination is found, replace solenoid(s) as necessary.

OTOH there is another bit of service info stating to not replace solenoids if a trans has more than 20k on it or has other signs of internal failure.........Go figure.

I checked the resistance and operation of the pressure solenoids A&B. Ohms were good on both, and they both clicked, but solenoid B didn't sound like it clicked as solidly as A did. I might try taking it off and checking up on it off the car. It wasn't too hard to reach from the RF wheel well. Think I will change the fluid and while it is down, get them off the transmission. While down there I checked the shift solenoids as well, and they sounded very good.
