I have a 62 plate Honda Civic 1.8 petrol iVTec that has been running perfectly until today. After refuelling with correct fuel I was driving when power went but engine kept running. Only way to clear issue was to drop a down a gear and accerlerate but problem remains. No warning or EMU lights have come on. Does anyone recognise the problem?

Re: JonK

Check back with the station for others with problems.

I once got a dose of diesel that was put into the premium tank by mistake that was a fiasco.

Thanks Craig, my first thought was the wrong fuel - I'll check in the morning.

The mechanics said they could smell the diesel mix once they got it in shop.

Best of luck and please update.

Took the car to a garage this morning but the mechanics cannot replicate the problem. They suspect either something has contaminated the fuel I put in or dirt has got into the fuel system and have put an additive into the fuel system to flush it through. I'll let you know how it goes, thanks for the interest.

Re: JonK

I recommend using Lucas or sea foam. It sounds like you got rust and dirt in your fuel. How old is the station and what brand is it?

It was a Tesco petrol station... The problem has been sent to Honda UK to see if they recognise the symptoms, the dealer yesterday that they aren't convinced it is a fuel issue but maybe the braking system that has an electrical fault activating the brakes automatically hence the reduced revs but not stopping the engine. Should know the results tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

I am no expert, but that sounds electrical, I would check main cab fuses first. I only say that because everything went out at the same time.

Turns out that when the car was built that one of the wires in the rear wiring loom was kinked and over time the insulation has broken causing the wire to short. The wire was linked to the brakes somehow and when it shorted it "tricked" the engine management unit into thinking the brakes had been activated and consequently quickly reduced the engine revs which was what I was experiencing. My car was just out of warranty but Honda have said that they will sort it all out at their expense. Thanks to everyone for your support. JonK
