2002 Civic EX, crappy start, 2 lights on dash, thump when I try to shift to drive
This happened yesterday evening. I drove the car about 40 miles w/gaps. Parked, went to move it, car started like it wasn't getting gas (just a guess), immobilizer key light was flashing and fault light came on steady. I wasn't paying real good attention but there may have been excessive smoking from the rear pipe. I tried to shift into drive, car thumped (sounded kind of like the tranny). Put it back in park, then tried drive again, thump, so I put it back in park and turned the car off. Car may have heated up quickly (it was off for probably an hour after driving it). But once I started it back up, it was fine. Drove it today about 30 miles.
It hasn't ran like a new car IMHO. It vibrates some, there's a rattling sound when it starts to warm up. I just did the plugs (for the 2nd time), used NGKs from Advance, $3.39 apiece. Used Autolite plats the last time . . . yuck I'm told. Had to replace the ELD (code p1298) to get it through NYS inspection. It's my mother's car, 62,000 miles.
I did drive through a parking lot that had a lot of snow, don't know if that had anything to do with the problem. It's just skeering me.
My first post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're both broke, any labor needed will have to be done by yours truly.
edit: non-VORTEC 1.7 l. engine

Make sure the alternator mounting bolts are tight.

the battery, but nothing else (other then the ELD).
Thing is, what was the thumping? It was almost like a security system, where any attempts to shift into drive are thwarted.
