so upset

Hi guys and gals. I picked up a very nice 2001 civic 5 speed a couple weeks ago and I crawled under to change oil and filter and was very happy to see a very nice dry under side, no rust, beutifull. I put I. 5w20 maxlife. Weeks go buy I go under today and oil pan is wet, and above it also. Valve cover looks dry, front and back. What the heck happened. I called original owner to ask what oil he used and he said green bottle quaker state 5w20 every time he said religiously. What do you think. Could be going on. Car drives, runs great, hop I didn't get screwed.

Re: so upset

Sounds like under the car was cleaned before the sale. Probably needs an oil pan gasket, it's an older car.

Make sure your oil filter is tight, not to tight.

and above it also.
Oil collects and runs all over when you pull the oil filter off. Some filters/blocks will let oil dribble all the way over to the trans area so it appears like a rear main leak.

-------------------

Check for leaks from

Oil pressure switch (near the oil filter)
VTEC valve, (if equipped, the rubber seals harden and leak BAD when they get old)
Distributor O ring, (or internal shaft seal if the inside of the dist is full of oil)
Oil drips from the timing cover areas

Re: so upset

OP, if you're upset about an oil leak, wait til your head gasket blows. Then you'll really have something to be upset about.

Good luck with the oil leak.

Re: so upset

it could just be oil running down from when you removed the old oil filter,

is your oil filter done up tight enough? maybe its leaking?
