dead battery?

Ok so I went to get in my 03 ex coupe 105kthis morning and it was making a clicking sound that sounded like it was coming from under my steering wheel.
I tryed to start it and nothing, dead but the clicking continues.I popped the trunk and the clicking stopped. I had to go to work so took wifes car and so I just wanna know if this is what happens when the battery dies.
I bought the car at 77k and this is the battery it had in it so i have no idea how old it is. I had no problems the night before.
any info would be great Thanks

When it was clicking, were the dash lights flickering? Can you turn on the lights? There should be a date on the battery. You can take the battery to Autozone or O'Reilly's to get tested for free, but you are right in that you're probably looking at an almost-dead battery.

Re: dead battery?

Hmm, let us know what happens when you change the battery. 95% sure that's the only problem.

Re: dead battery?

Better yet, remove it and have it load-tested. Then if it can be revived, revive with proper charging equipment.

I've seen batteries on the moto side revive to full capacity with as little as 1 VDC... but only with a good desulfation and deep charge. If there's a plate that's broken or grounding in the battery though... time to spend some beer money.

Re: dead battery?

Ok so I got home from work and started my investigation
And it turns out I left my headlights on all night so I jump started the car and all is good.
The altinator charged the battery back up an it's holding the charge nicely. I ran errands the rest of the evening with no problems!!!
Thanks

Re: dead battery?

Just be careful since you deep cycled the battery. It could still fail prematurely.

Cool -- glad you got rolling again.

Keep in mind, that automotive charging systems, while better at maintaining charge in larger, heavier lead-acid batteries than moto charging systems... are still only that -- battery charge MAINTENANCE systems. They aren't designed to return batteries to the best, most reliable state they can be.

What can happen (most often with weak and neglected charging systems and connections), is that a surface charge is set. This means when under no load, it'll show the same 12.5 VDC as a healthy battery... but give it any load? It falls on its face. A starter is a 70A+ load, usually the largest on a stock vehicle. This is where a surface charge is useless, and why I recommended you properly load-test and charge it with pro equipment. Even cheap batteries can last a long time, if discharge is properly dealt with.
