Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
Hello All,
I've been using the Torque Android app to monitor my coolant temp and I e noticed that when driving (mainly at steady speed on the highway) my cooltant temp stays from 178°-185° F but during stop and go and idle it climbs to 195°-208°F. Is this normal? Or could my fan temp switch be failing?

Re: Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
Agree, is normal. When the car is in motion airflow moves away more heat than when idling at a light.
If you think 208 degF is hot... the Honda motorcycles were even worse. In Phoenix my VFR800FI hit 215 regularly, by design, as did the old 929 and 954RRs... it was due to stock fuel mapping for emissions.
You may want to check your coolant level in the rad and if necessary, burp the system. Less coolant in the system means less fluid to absorb and transfer heat.

Re: Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
Yeah I just burped it yesterday but it still goes up to around 200° F. I'm just a little paranoid because I've had my HG go about 4 months ago and I want to do everything I can to prevent it from happening again so I want it to run cool. The fans come on but don't seem to kick in until about 205° F. Is that when they are supposed to come on?

Re: Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
That sounds fine... cool even. My SV650S motorcycle hit exactly those numbers and a little higher at idle (~205). And I had Water Wetter and a properly-burped system. Water Wetter and other surface-tension-collapsing coolant products will help bring temps down a bit, ~6 - 8 degF with a 50/50 mix for WW.
Using my Torque app today it showed at cruising I was hitting ~190 degF (driving in town)... didn't get a chance to catch idle temps at a light but I'm pretty sure they're in that ballpark, as the gauge stays rock solid. I also need to drop the coolant as it's old, so it bodes well for your observed temps.

Re: Coolant Temp Higher at Idle
Great thanks! The temp neddle on the gauge cluster stays just below the mid point all the time whether its at 180°F or 208°F so that's good. I'll be checking the coolant today again to see if there is any more air in there. I really hope there is not because that's what would happen when my HG went out originally.
