DIY: Draining your fuel tank
DIY: Draining your fuel tank
So my daughter put diesel fuel into the Civic.
Don't ask how. The Civic has the anti-siphon screen and there is no easy way to drain the fuel tank. Fortunately, I found this post: http://www.justanswer.com/honda/3p2z...002-civic.html
I followed it and it worked! You need to remove the box over the intake (undo vent hose, disconnect electrical plug, (3) 10 mm screws) to access the fuel line. It unclips easily by squeezing the locking pins. I then removed the rear seat bottom, opened the fuel pump cover (4-screws) and followed the instructions for jumping the fuel pump. I used a deep cycle fishing battery, some wire and alligator clips and it took about 45 minutes to drain 12+ gallons. I reassembled everything, added some gas and the car fired up after a few stumbles. Cleared the codes and I am good to go. Hope this helps someone who has this problem.

Re: DIY: Draining your fuel tank
Please be aware that the fuel pump alone usually does not completely empty the fuel tank. There could be as much as a half gallon of liquid (or more) remaining even though the pump quit moving liquid.
Diesel will be diluted by fresh gasoline so hopefully it won't cause problems.....
If there had been water in the tank it could still be a problem.
My 2¢

May still set codes for a bit, regularly had customers do this to gas power equipment when I was in that field (they always had diesel tractors too), and a few gallons of gas dilutes diesel well enough in less fuel. All I know is wow, expensive lesson for her to learn.
