Timing belt change-what else should be done? SUCCESS
Timing belt change-what else should be done? SUCCESS
140K miles- Going to have the dealer change my timing belt, what else should be done while they are doing it? Rough estimate on cost? This is the first time I have had it done-too much for me for a diy.

To save some money you could buy OE parts online and find a dealer/shop that will instal them.
I would replace:
Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
Water pump
Crank Seal
Cam seal
Valve cover gasket set
Accessory belts (since they will be off)

to the original poster, i would replace the timing belt and timing belt tensioner, 2 drive belts, cam seal and crank seal seeing as they are cheap, and that's it if your tight on cash,
if you want to spend extra money and have the money to spend, then replace your water pump, thermostat, and coolant while your at it,

a dealership won't do that.....that would be like bringing your own food to a restaurant and asking them to cook it for you,

Got a quote to : Replace timing belt & tensioner, water pump, thermostat, coolant, crank & cam seals, valve cover gasket, and 2 drive belts, $1465.
Does that sound reasonable?

Holy ****, 1465 for a timing belt? I paid less when I decided I was frustrated and had another shop replace valves/hg for me.
Local dealership quoted me ~$650 for a timing belt (along with water pump, tensioner, ac/ps belt) job.

That's way high for here, and they raep you raw here (one dealer on an island with lots of very proud indies).
I'd shop around... unless that shop has the best rep you can find for timeliness and you see an itemized RO, I'd look elsewhere. Even if you had to drive 100 mi and find something to do all day, that's worth $500-$600 savings to me...

I looked it up, my online 100% OEM parts list for my 05 was about $200. Can't remember the labor but it was done by an independent top technician.... and was a very fair price as always.
Re: Timing belt change-what else should be done?
For that kind of money, they should be doing the head gasket too (which is typically when all this other stuff gets replaced at the same time).

Thanks for the input everyone. I am waiting for another quote, both are from dealers, if not any lower I will look for an independent service guy. The car runs great now and I am not putting many miles on it so no hurry to get screwed. Thanks again........

Where are you located??
Re: Timing belt change-what else should be done?
I am in Southern California. I sell printed products and have had a customer for 20 years, U S Foreign Auto, so my brain finally clicks, I call him and he knows what needs to be done, $600 or so. I forgot my Honda was a foreign car,,,,Thanks again for all your help. btw, one dealer never bothered to give me a price and I called and faxed over the quote information twice...

If the board had a party I would bring the beer. Thanks to everyone that helped me saye $745. I had the Timing belt, Tensioner, Water Pump, Drive Belts, (OEM Kit) Oil and Oil Filter and the spark plugs done for $702. The mechanic said the seals were fine, he could have charged me for the work, but said they did not need to be changed. The car runs great.

Fixes on Civics are super easy to do yourself. I changed all my belt (timing, a/c, and power steering) in 2 hours. Just make sure that you have your car in time before you put everything back together.
