Scoring on head from cam shaft journals

I want to get the head machine, but is the scoring on this head ok? Each of the channel has scoring from the cam shaft journals.

D17a2 head

Also, how to remove a broken exhaust stud for the head?

Anyone use this shop to machine their cylinder head?

Hard to tell from the picture, but light marks usually are not a problem.
The journals in the head are the ones that will show the wear, because the rockers always push the cam downward.
If you can't hang a fingernail in the scratches, I'd think they aren't anything to worry about.

Ask your machinist about it.

Was there an issue with the cam and journals? I bet not, and I expect it has probably been running this way without a problem for years.

Is the head warped?

If you can't do that, just let the machine shop handle it too. It's much more difficult to repair a screwed up hole than a broken stud.

No clue from me.

Look at how smooth the head gasket surfaces are on the head and the block. Really close to a mirror finish, right? You can see the machining lines, but not really feel them.

When you get the head back from machining, the surface needs to be just as smooth as it is right now. It should not look or feel like someone ran a belt sander over it.

The head gasket needs to work with smooth surfaces or it won't seal properly.

Hey, uh, only scrape the head gasket surfaces with a razor blade. No power tools or roloc abrasive discs.

I dropped the head off by Canadian Cylinder Head Technologies and it will cost me $120. They will clean, resurface, remove the one broken studd and regrind one valve guide. I should get it back by tomorrow.

I inquired about valve job, port and polish and that will be another $500.

Na, I was checking the prices. My engine has 210k if it had 100k I would have gotten it. He was telling me some people can get up to 100 km more of gas mileage with the ported head.

Re: Scoring on head from cam shaft journals

I will pickup the head this week. I have decided to upgrade the cam to crower stage 1.

I got the head and it looks good. Now I just have to wait for the cam.
